1 Chemical Reactions 6.2

2 Reactants and Products
Chemical reaction- the process by which atoms or groups of atoms in substances are reorganized into different substances. Chemical bonds are broken down during reactions.

3 Chemical equations There are two parts to a chemical equation
Reactants- the beginning compounds, what is changed Products- the end compounds, what has been made

4 Energy of Reactions In order for chemical reactions to take place, they need energy. Activation energy is the term used for the energy required to make a reaction take place.

5 Energy of Reactions There are two types of reactions that can occur.
Endothermic- retaining energy/ heat Exothermic- expelling energy/heat Exothermic Endothermic

6 Enzymes Enzymes are a type of protein that speed up the reaction rate in a biological process (make reactions happen faster) A catalyst is the specific type of enzyme that lowers activation energy to make a reaction happen faster.

7 Enzymes This catalytic process can be demonstrated by the lock-and-key model. Reactants are called substrates in this model. The active site is the specific location where the substrate binds.

8 Key points for 6.2 Chemical reactions have two parts- reactants and products Reactions need energy to take place Catalysts lower the amount of energy needed to make a reaction happen
