EPOS WP15/TCS Geological Information and Modelling is implementing a standardised way of sharing information and data from boreholes. A first service : To make this feasible, data providers (e.g., geological services and scientific drilling programmes/projects) do not need to change their internal databases to match the GeoSciML structure, but expose their data to the GeoSciML structure at the point of delivery. WP15 central node is then connected to data providers’ web services in order to provide a unique entry point for Borehole discovery. The service provides the possibility to search and filter the content of the European Borehole Index and receive information about relevant boreholes through EPOS.

The second task : It is planned to develop and implement a service that allows the direct delivery of data from the borehole (e.g. geophysical logs) and drill core (e.g. geological logs) through EPOS in a standardised way. Borehole UML conceptual model : It’s already mapped to GeoSciML Borehole, Inspire:Geology:Borehole, BoreholeML. This activity will be coordinated with the relevant OGC domain working group. OGC approves new standard for geological science data Contact: Release Date: Wednesday, 15 March 2017 UTC The membership of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) has approved GeoSciML as an OGC Standard. The OGC GeoSciML Standard defines a model and encoding for geological features commonly described and portrayed in geological maps, cross sections, geological reports, and databases. GeoSciML provides a mechanism for storage and exchange of a broad range of geologic data enabling users to generate geologic depictions (such as maps) in a consistent and repeatable fashion. The model was developed by the IUGS CGI (Commission for the Management and Application of Geoscience Information) and version 4.1 is the first version officially submitted as an OGC standard.
