Notes SPI Reactants & Products Science Learning Intention: Identify reactants and products in a chemical reaction. Purpose: to recognize the components of a chemical reaction. Success Criteria I will show that I understand this topic by earning a 90 or higher on the quiz. I Can Statement By the end of this unit I will be able to say... ...I can identify reactants and products in a chemical equation.
2
2H2 + O2 2H2O Example: Chemical Reactions
Are represented by chemical equations Chemical Equations Have two parts: (1) reactants and (2) products Reactants: are the "ingredients" of a chem reaction. These are the things you are combining… the things you start with. Products: are the things that you produce in a chemical reaction… the things you end up with. Reactants (Hydrogen & Oxygen) Product (water) 2H2 + O H2O Example:
3
Identify the reactants and products
Examine the chemical equation below. This example represents burning charcoal on a BBQ grill Notice the chemical symbols, chemical formulas, and signs. Identify the reactants and products Reactants: Carbon (C) & Oxygen (O) Product: Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Below are the reactants Below are the products Burning Charcoal Reactants: Carbon & Oxygen Product: Carbon Dioxide
4
Reactants Product Examine the reactants Examine the product
Reactants- starting materials in a chemical reaction. Examine the product Products- substances formed/produced in a chemical reaction Remember: the arrow ALWAYS points towards the product(s)! Reactants Product
5
Identify the REACTANTS in this equation.
SPI Reactants & Products Review Science 2H2 + O H2O Identify the REACTANTS in this equation. Reminder: The arrow always points towards the product(s)! Reactants 2H2 and O2 …or you could simply identify the reactants as H (hydrogen) and O (oxygen)
6
Identify the PRODUCT in this equation.
SPI Reactants & Products Review Science N2 + 3H NH3 Identify the PRODUCT in this equation. Reminder: The arrow always points towards the product(s)! Product 2NH3 …or you could simply identify the product as NH3 (ammonia)
7
Identify the REACTANTS in this equation.
SPI Reactants & Products Review Science 2NaCl Na + Cl2 Identify the REACTANTS in this equation. Reminder: The arrow always points towards the products! Reactants 2Na and CL2 …or you could simply indentify the reactants as Na (sodium) and Cl (chlorine)
8
Identify the PRODUCTS in this equation.
SPI Reactants & Products Review Science Sn + 2H2O SnO2 + 2H2 Identify the PRODUCTS in this equation. Reminder: The arrow always points towards the products! Products Sn and 2H2O …or you could simply indentify the products as Sn (tin) and H2O (water)
