1 DO NOW Pick up notes sheet.

2 EARTH MATTER… Questions we will answer: What is Earth made of?
How are the systems different?

3 EARTH’S ELEMENTS What ARE these elements?

4 ATOMS Atomic Number (top) – number of protons in an atom’s nucleus
Atomic Mass (bottom) – average of the masses of the isotopes of the element Proton: positive charge (+) Neutron: neutral charge (o) Electron: negative charge (-) Nucleus: protons + neutrons

5 PERIODS AND GROUPS Family groups have same:
Number of electrons in the outer energy level Charge from gaining or losing electrons in similar way Similar characteristics Elements in Each Period has… Same number of energy levels

6 SPECIAL ELEMENTS Hydrogen (H) and helium (He) are special elements.
Hydrogen unique characteristics Helium outer energy level is full, but only has two electrons

7 SOME FAMILY GROUPS…. All families have:
The same number of valence (outer level) electrons The same charge They share similar characteristics.

8 TRANSITION METALS, LANTHANIDES AND ACTINIDES
Transition metals can have more than eight electrons in the outer energy level. The Lanthanide series can be found naturally on Earth. Only one element in the series is radioactive. The Actinide series are all radioactive and some are not found in nature.

9 METALS, NONMETALS AND METALLOIDS
Most periodic tables contain a stair-step line which allows you to identify which elements are metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.

10 COMBINING ELEMENTS 1. Elements combine to form compounds.
2. Single unit of a compound is a molecule.

11 COMBINING TO BUILD COMPOUNDS
3. Atoms will combine in ways that make them more stable 4. Atoms will combine with elements that will give them the electrons they need.

12 PERIODIC TABLE: CLUES TO COMBINING ELEMENTS

13 COMMON COMPOUNDS

14 REVIEW… What is the difference between an atom, molecule and compound?

15 Use one of MANY free APPS to help!
ACTIVITY: Color the Periodic Table according to the directions Use one of MANY free APPS to help!
