Cardiac Optogenetics: Methodology and Applications This review summarizes developments achieved over the first decade of research in the emergent field of cardiac optogenetics. Recent additions to the cardiac optogenetic toolbox, including advances in development of light-sensitive ion channels, optogenetic stimulation of light-sensitized tissue, delivery of optogenetic constructs to the working heart, and computational modeling approaches are discussed. The authors then review recent in vitro applications of the technology, including all-optical, high-throughput, contactless assays for quantification of electrophysiological properties and discuss the potential for future translational applications, such as light-based defibrillation.
