Executive Branch The JOB of the executive branch of state government is to CARRY OUT THE LAWS of the state. The executive branch of government has many departments. For example this branch deals with highway safety and protecting natural resources.

Who is in charge of the executive branch?
The GOVERNOR is the head of the executive branch. He is elected by the citizens of Alabama every four years. He can then choose people to help run the state.

How does a bill become a law?
First, citizens develop an idea for a bill. A bill is an idea for a law. Next, members of the House or Senate propose the bill to other members. Then, the General Assembly votes to approve the bill. IF THE GOVERNOR VETOES THE BILL, another vote can be taken. If 3/5 of the General Assembly votes to approve the bill this time, the bill becomes a law. After that, the governor signs the bill OR the governor vetoes the bill.

Legislative Branch The job of the legislative branch of state government is to make the laws. A bill is an idea for a law. This branch has two parts: the Senate and the House of Representatives. Together these two groups are called the General Assembly. Senate + House of Representatives= General Assembly

Judicial Branch The job of the judicial branch of government is to interpret the law. This means this branch makes decisions about the law and decides if laws go against the Alabama Constitution. The Alabama Constitution is a document that explains the job of each branch, and contains Alabama’s laws.

Who is in charge of the judicial branch?
The seven judges of the Supreme Court are at the head of the judicial branch. The highest court in Alabama is the Supreme Court. All other courts and judges in Alabama are also part of the judicial branch of government.
