1 Which organ system is correctly matched with its main function?
A) The excretory system defends the body from disease-causing organisms. B) The nervous system controls body responses to the environment. C) The skeletal system distributes energy throughout the body. D) The digestive system removes waste products from the body. Bellwork

2 Bellwork Review Which organ system is correctly matched with its main function? A) The excretory system defends the body from disease-causing organisms. (Not the answer. The Excretory system gets rid of waste. The immune system defends the body from disease-causing organisms.)  B) The nervous system controls body responses to the environment. (Correct. This is the answer.) C) The skeletal system distributes energy throughout the body. (Not the answer.  The skeletal system provides a structure for you, allows movement, protects internal organs, and creates blood cells.) D) The digestive system removes waste products from the body. (Not the answer.  The digestive system's function is to break down food for nutrients.  The urinary/excretary system gets rid of waste created by the body.)

3 Objectives Students will be able to analyze how plant and animal cells are organized to carry on the processes of life.  SPI Explain the basic functions of a major organ system.  Success Criteria: I can describe the function of the urinary and reproductive systems. I can explain how they work with other systems.

4 Demonstration Which of these beakers represents the total amount of liqiuid that a human bladder can hold? Which of these beakers represents the amount of liquid at which a human brain will register the need to urinate?

5 Lets make our chart for Urinary AND Reproductive
* REMEMBER THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO IS CUT OUT THE HUMAN AND GLUE TO YOUR PAPER BEFORE DRAWING YOUR CHART! Upper left quadrant-Notes Upper right quadrant-Major Organs Lower left quadrant-Functions Lower right quadrant- How it works with other systems

6 Urinary Systesm The urinary system contains organs that remove waste products from your blood.  Urinary System Organs: Kidneys, ureter, urinary bladder, and urethra Kidneys are a pair of organs that filter water, and wastes from the blood and that excrete products as urine.  Nephrons are microscopic filters in the kidney that remove wastes from the blood.

9 HBS Chart- Urinary Function: Removes waste from the blood and regulates the body's fluids. Major Organs: Kidneys, Bladder How it works with other systems: Filters waste out of the blood from the cardiovascular system.

10 A story about Kidney donation…

11 Reproductive System The reproductive systems are responsible for making the reproductive cells, called gametes, for the male and female. The male reproductive system produces and delivers sperm. The female reproductive system produces eggs and nourishes and protects the fetus.

12 Male Reproductive System
The testes are a pair of organs that make sperm and testosterone. Testosterone is the main male sex hormone that regulates the production of sperm and the development of male characteristics (facial hair, deeper voices) The penis is the male organ that transfers sperm to the female reproductive system.

13 Female Reproductive System
The two ovaries are the organs that make eggs. Ovaries also release estrogen and progesterone which are the main female sex hormones. The hormones regulate the release of eggs and development of female characteristics. Eggs travel down an organ called the Fallopian tube which leads to the uterus, the organ that protects a developing fetus. When a baby is ready to be born, it travels through the vagina, the canal that connects to the uterus to the outside world.

15 HBS Chart-Reproductive
Function: Produces gametes (reproductive cells) and hormones to regulate development. Major Organs: Testes, Ovaries How it works with other systems: Releases hormones for the cardiovascular system to transport to other parts of the body.
