Vocabulary Matrix - Sound Waves 5.3 Name: ______________________________ Term Dictionary Definition 3 Examples NO Pictures Explain in your own words Use correctly in a science related sentence Sound Wave A Sound wave is a mechanical wave because it has to travel through a medium. A Sound wave is also a Compressional wave. Diffraction The bending of waves around a barrier or the edges of an opening. Absorption The process through which materials take in sound energy. Reflection The bouncing of a sound wave off a surface. Amplitude The maximum distance that particles move from their resting position in a wave. Pitch The audible property of sound that varies with frequency. Frequency The number of waves that pass a given point in one second.

Vocabulary Matrix 5.3 Term Dictionary Definition 3 Examples NO Pictures Explain in your own words Use correctly in a sentence Volume Loudness of a sound; relates to amplitude Pitch The audible property of sound that varies with frequency. Wavelength The distance from one point on the wave to the next identical point. Wave Speed The speed at which a wave travels. Wave speed is related to wavelength, frequency, and period by the equation wave speed = frequency x wavelength. Medium (Liquid, Solid, Gas) A material through which waves can travel
