Potential clinical impact of laser-accelerated beams in cancer therapy
Ceferino Obcemea Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center , New York , NY
2
Unique advantages of laser-accelerated beams
1. Bragg peak 2. low emittance 3. quasi-monoenergetic or reversed Maxwell spectrum 4.high fluence, micro-bunching, enhanced RBE 5. possible source for multi-ion species 6. compact delivery/ “cost”
3
Summary: Clinical impact of laser-accelerated beams
Sparing Normal tissue: -proximal to tumor target due to low emittance (minigrid scheme, Pencil beam scanning) -distal to tumor target due to Bragg peak -lower Rx dose due to effectively higher RBE Maximizing tumor dose: -enhanced Bragg peak due to collective effects of high flux -fast dose delivery, single fraction due to high rep rate Compact/ “cost” -more diffused technology-- > clinical trials--- > best practices -allows the study of basic science of nanodosimetry, nano-radiobiology
