The History of Professional Football Our presentation will discuss the history of professional football. It will show how football has progressed from the early days and we will mention some of the highlights and players.

The Roaring Twenties Jim Thorpe was player and president of the now-named National Football League. All of the rules finally got set and professional football truly began.

The Post-Depression Era (1930s) League is split into divisions. Many teams are joining and dropping out of the league. Chicago Bears attain the first ever undefeated season, unmatched until the 1970s.

1940s Wartime causes several teams to leave league, or merge. Teams did rejoin following war. First black players are signed into the league - Marion Motley, Bill Willis, and Woody Strode.

1950s Instead of having an American and National conference the NFL goes to divisions renamed Eastern and Western. Championship games are played, but there is still no Super Bowl. Pro football is becoming more popular, still not a craze.

1960s Vince Lombardis Packers win first two Super Bowls in history Broadway Joe Namath leads the New York Jets to win Super Bowl III in the biggest upset in NFL history. Pete Rozelle-new com.

Sunday Afternoon Fever (1970s) Miami Dolphins win Super Bowl VII in first ever perfect season. (record & SB) NFC and AFC system is created, which is the same used today. NFL is expanded from 14 to 16 games. Walter Payton leads NFL in rushing five years straight.

1980s The NFL Players Association calls a strike following the second week of the season. Play doesnt resume until Nov. 21. As a result, only 9 regular season games are played. Four-time champions
