5. Engage
‘The earth and all life on it is a gift from God given us to share and develop, not to dominate and exploit. Our actions have consequences for the rights of others and for the resources of the earth. The goods of the earth and the beauties of nature are to be enjoyed and celebrated as well as consumed. We have the responsibility to create a balanced policy between consumption and conservation. We must consider the welfare of future generations in our planning for and utilisation of the earth’s resources.’

Some discussion ideas …
What are the benefits of recycling plastic?
What can happen if we don’t recycle the plastic that we use?
Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?”
Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair.
Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student.
Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections.
Activity suggestion …
See how many plastic items you can recycle this week, make it a competition in your tutor group. Who can recycle the most!

7. Respond
[Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …]
Dear God,
Help us to be considerate of the future of the Earth. Give us wisdom when we are shopping and when we are throwing things away. Help us as a school to become better at recycling.

Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …
