SOLAR ENERGY POLICY IN SOUTHERN INDIA (TELANGANA)

WHAT IS SOLAR ENERGY ? Solar energy is the energy which comes from the sun and is converted into electricity, using solar panels which are often arranged on a building or concentrated in solar farms to facilitate a reaction that converts sun's light radiation into electricity.

HISTORY  In 1839 Alexandre Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect which explains how electricity can be generated from sunlight. He claimed that “shining light on an electrode submerged in a conductive solution would create an electric current.”  1954 Daryl Chapin, Calvin Fuller, and Gerald Pearson develop the silicon photovoltaic (PV) cell at Bell Lab s  First solar cell capable of converting enough of the sun’s energy into power to run everyday electrical equipment.

SOLAR ENERGY ADVANTAGES RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCE LOW ELECTRICITY BILLS DIVERSE APPLICATIONS LOW MAINTENANCE COSTS LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT DISADVANTAGES HIGH COST WEATHER DEPENDENT TAKES LOT OF SPACE MANUFACTURING PRODUCES GHG.

SOLAR ENERGY IN INDIA India is densely populated and has high solar insolation, an ideal combination for using solar power in India Solar power in India has been growing at a rate of 113% and now dropped to around 4.34 (6.0¢ US) per kWh, which is around 18% lower than the average price for electricity generated by coal-fired plants. India is home to the world's first and only 100% solar powered airport, located at Cochin, Kerala. India also has a 100% solar powered railway station in Guwhati, Assam. India's first and the largest floating solar power plant was constructed at Banasura Sagar reservoir in Wayanad, Kerala.

COCHIN AIRPORT At Cochin International, the plant comprises a total of 46,150 solar panels which are spread across 45 acres of land which is roughly equal to 25 football fields. It is established in the cargo complex of the airport. The overall generation of electricity of the plant is expected about 50,000-60,000 units of per day and it is more than enough to fulfil the overall requirements of the airport. Flydealfare.com

The Guwahati railway station The Guwahati railway station has grid-connected rooftop solar panels, a capacity of 700 kilowatt (0.7 megawatt) that will cater to the electricity needs of the station, the coach depot, and the railway colony area, the Northeast Frontier Railway. This will help the railway network save around Rs67.7 lakhs (approximately $99,900) per year in electricity bills. Quartzindia.com

SOUTHERN INDIA ( TELANGANA) Telangana is a state in India situated on the centre-south stretch of the Indian peninsula on the high Deccan Plateau. It is the twelfth largest state and the twelfth-most populated state in India with a geographical area of 112,077 km2. The economy of Telangana is the eighth- largest state economy in India with 8.43 lakh crore (US$120 billion) in gross domestic product and a per capita GDP of 181,000 (US$2,500 ). Telangana ranks second when it comes to solar energy generation capacity in India. The state is trailing behind Karnataka with a solar power generation capacity of 3400 MW and plans to achieve a capacity. of 5000 MW by 2022

SOLAR ENERGY POLICY (TELANGANA) The State now has an installed capacity of 3,400 MW. Telangana has annually average 300 clear sunny days and having the average solar potential of 5.6 kWh/m 2. It is set become one of the hot spots for solar energy development in the country given the rapid strides it has made. The cost of a 1KW solar power unit is Rs 1, 45,000 (£1600) and after 30 percent subsidy, it will be Rs 55,000 (£600).

SOLAR POWER PLANT  The solar park Telangana I at Palwai village near Gadwal in the Mahbubnagar district of Telangana is a 12 megawatt (MWAC) photovoltaic power station, commissioned in June 2016.  The solar park was named after the state of Telangana and was constructed using 38,430 solar modules.  It covers an area of 40 acres (16 hectares) and supplies about 10,000 people with energy.  Owner of the power plant is Solar Arise Limited, which main shareholder is Thomas Lloyd Group. Solar Arise currently owns and operates 130 MW of grid-connected solar power projects in Indi a.

SOLAR POWER PLANT 5MW Solar Power Plant Operational at GMR Hyderabad International Airport(Hyderabad) Generating around 25000 units/day of pollution free energy meeting the airport’s peak power demand during day time Saving of over 7100 Metric Tonnes of carbon emission annually Plans to go for an additional 7MW Solar Power Plant.thebetterindia.com

SOLAR POWER PLANT The campus of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Sultanpur in Medak district, have 16,000 solar panels established over a 25-acre area in its campus by the Telangana government, it also generates 18-20 MW power per thehansindia.com

FUTURE GOALS ReNew Power one of India’s largest independent renewable energy power producers, planned a 143 MW solar farm in Dharmaraopet village in Sadashiva Nagar mandal, Kamareddy district, of Telangana. The company has invested about Rs 9.3 billion in the project, at a rate of Rs 0.065 billion per MW. BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited) is now going to add 129 MW capacity through Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) power plants in four locations. The plants are to be set up at four locations in Telangana – Ramagundam (50 MW), Yellandu (39 MW), Manuguru (30 MW) and Pegadapally (10 MW). The State Government has made an action plan to achieve cumulative target of 5000 MW by 2019.
