1 PAP Physics Review Ch 14 – Light and Reflection
Electromagnetic waves All travel at the same speed in a vacuum (c=f); as f↑ ↓ Know colors in order of increasing frequency (decreasing wavelength) Brightness decreases by the inverse square law Law of reflection i=r Mirrors Flat mirrors produce virtual, upright, unmagnified images (left-right reversed) Convex (diverging) mirrors produce virtual, upright, smaller images; convex mirrors have negative f Concave (converging) mirrors Beyond C – real, inverted, smaller Between C and f – real, inverted, larger In front of f – virtual, upright, larger Real images (di is +) are inverted (M is -); virtual (di is -) are upright (M is +) Draw ray diagrams – ray parallel to principal axis reflects through f; ray through f reflects parallel; ray through C reflects back upon itself Use mirror and magnification equations Parabolic mirrors eliminate spherical aberration Know what determines color of an object; three primary additive colors; three primary subtractive colors; why the sky is blue; why sunsets are red Linear polarization of light verifies light is a transverse wave; no light passes through when films are at right angles
