1 Cell Cycle

2 Learning Objectives Describe what happens during interphase and mitosis of the cell cycle

3 What is the Cell Cycle? During the cell cycle, a cell grows, prepares (interphase) for cell division and divides (M phase) to form two daughter cells

4 Purpose of The Cell Cycle
Parent Identical Daughter Cells The purpose of the cell cycle is to replicate each parent cell to form two identical daughter cells.

5 2 Stages of the Cell Cycle
Stage 1 = Interphase Stage 2 = Mitotic phase

6 Interphase Three parts: G1, S and G2 phases
90% of a cell’s time is spent in interphase.

7 G1 Phase G1 phase - Cells grow and replicate organelles.

8 S Phase S phase - DNA synthesis occurs and chromosomes are replicated.

9 G2 Phase G2 phase - additional cell growth and preparation for mitosis.

10 Mitotic phase (M phase)
Mitotic phase – consists of mitosis and cytokinesis

14 Mitotic phase (M phase)
Mitosis - division of the cell nucleus Cytokinesis - division of the cytoplasm

15 Functions of Cell Division
Reproduction - formation of an organism, increasing the population. Growth - development of multicellular organisms. Repair - repair and renew cells that die from normal wear or damage.
