Unit 6: Cell Growth and Development 6.2 The Cell Cycle
2
Series of events where cell grows, prepares to divide, and divides to form two daughter cells.
The length of the cell cycle and each part varies depending on the type of cell The cell spends 90% of its time in Interphase Cell Cycle
3
Cell Cycle
4
Interphase Gap 1 (G1): Cell growth
Synthesis (S): DNA/chromosome replication Chromatid: Each DNA strand in duplicated chromosome (sister chromatid) Centromeres: the part of a chromosome that links sister chromatids Mutations: a change in a gene due to damage or being copied incorrectly Gap 2 (G2): Preparation for mitosis Organelles and molecules needed for division produced Contain twice as much DNA as the original cell Interphase
5
Cell Division Mitosis: Nucleus divides into 2 nuclei
Cytokinesis: cytoplasm divides Forms two identical daughter cells Cell Division
6
Hand-Up Stand-Up Pair Up
What is the longest stage of the cell cycle called? During what stages does the G1, S, and G2 phases happen? During what phase does mitosis and cytokinesis occur? During what phase is DNA replicated? During what phase of the cell cycle does the cell grow? Hand-Up Stand-Up Pair Up
7
Hand-Up Stand-Up Pair Up
How many stages are there in mitosis? Put the following actions in order: DNA replication, cell grows, cell division, cell prepares for mitosis. Explain why cells don’t just continue to grow larger as organism grow larger. Why do cells divide? Hand-Up Stand-Up Pair Up
8
Word Bank: Anaphase Cell division (M phase) Cytokinesis G1- cell grows G2- prepares for mitosis Interphase Metaphase Mitosis Prophase S- DNA replication Telophase
