1 Notes #4: Stock System Naming (Ionic Bonds)
WNHS Chemistry ***You need your Periodic Table***

2 USING THE STOCK SYSTEM Today we will be naming and writing formulas for compounds involving the transition metals (d-block) Quiz tomorrow will be on this!

3

4 WHY HAVE WE AVOIDED THESE THUS FAR?
Transition metals can have more than one stable charge**** Example: CoCl3 vs. CoCl2 Example: Fe2O3 vs. FeS Use the stock system to tell which ion is in the compound!

5 I II III IV V VI VII VIII STOCK SYSTEM NAMING
Roman numerals show the CHARGE of the metal ion (NOT the number of atoms!!!) I II III IV V VI VII VIII Transition Metal Charge Anion Metal Name Name

6 MBr4 M(CO3)3 M2(SO4)3 M3(PO4)2 “Metal” (IV) Bromide
Remember: This is the CHARGE of ONE atom WHAT’S MY CHARGE MBr4 M(CO3)3 M2(SO4)3 M3(PO4)2 “Metal” (IV) Bromide “Metal” (VI) Carbonate “Metal” (III) Sulfate “Metal” (II) Phosphate

7 BE ABLE TO GO BACKWARDS! :)
Ti(NO3)4 Titanium (IV) Nitrate Manganese (IV) Sulfite Iron (II) Nitride Mn(SO3)2 Fe3N2

8 RULES TO REMEMBER Use this system ONLY for transition metals (d-block)
Metals are always POSITIVE (left side of the PT) If you know the negative, you can assign a positive Roman Numerals show the CHARGE of the ion (not the # of atoms) FORMAT → Metal Name (Metal Charge) Anion Name
