Please note: WA. State history is a required class. If students do not pass it, they will need to take the class again in the summer or in high school.

3. What are we going to learn about?

We will be studying medieval history. This is the time period from about 476 C.E. to C.E.
China
Japan

4. Religion and Philosophies We cannot understand a culture without considering their religious beliefs.

6. Understanding the Grade Book
Assessments & Projects = 100%
Assignments = 0% (Yes, they are still required work!)
Non-academic grades = 0% (Yes, they still matter!)

7. How grades are determined 1
The grade book is designed to show what students have learned.
There will be a test for each chapter.
There will be a unit assessment at the end of each unit.
If students meet standard (85%) on the chapter test, they do not have to take that portion of the unit assessment.
If students do not meet standard on the chapter test, they will be required to complete an additional chapter assignment AND take that section again on the unit assessment.
If students have not completed a chapter assignment, they will not be allowed to take the unit assessment until they have completed a chapter assignment.

8. How grades are determined 2
If students have met standard on the chapter test, but would like to improve their grade, they may complete an additional chapter assignment and try again (retake) on the unit assessment.
In short, the unit assessment will act as a retake opportunity if needed. There will not be additional retakes.
It is in a student’s best interest to complete at least one chapter assignment, study for the chapter test, and regard the unit assessment as an option to show improved learning of the unit martial.
How often is Family Access updated?
As soon as possible after an assignment is graded

9. Assignments Sometimes we will work through a chapter together.
Sometimes students will be given a menu of assignments to choose from.
Students will often review & grade their work with a peer.
Students will have the opportunity to revise & make corrections to their work to support their learning.
Students will often have a “turn-in window,” meaning they will have a period of time to turn in an assignment. There will be an end due date.
Some assignments will not have the “turn-in” window opportunity.
Assignments will be marked missing and/or late if they are not turned in before or on the due date.

10. Bring your supplies to class
Students are expected to come to class prepared each day. They will be allowed ONE reminder if they need to go back to their locker for supplies. After this, they will be counted tardy if they need to go back to their locker. After three tardies, I will send an home. If a student continues to come to class unprepared, they will be sent to the office.

11. Extra credit is not an option
Extra credit is not an option. It is important that students do their best work and take advantage of retake & redo opportunities.

12. Cell Phones Cell phones are NOT allowed in class.
I do not want to see them, hear, them, or know that they exist – UNLESS:
…they have permission to use them on a class assignment or
activity.
…they have permission to listen to music, but it would be
instrumental tunes ONLY.
Phones should be zipped away somewhere, not simply placed under the binder.

13. If students know they are going to be gone, please let me know and I will do my best to let them know what they will be missing in class.
It is the student’s responsibility to get the work they missed and/or schedule a time to ask questions and make up missing work.
Students have one extra day for each day they were excused to make up missing work.

14. Community We are a community.
Students are expected to be respectful. This means not interrupting my teaching or the learning of others.
Students are expected to be kind.
Students are expected to be involved in their own learning.
Let’s have fun, and I look forward to getting to know your student!

15. Ways to support your student
Make sure students have a homework routine for after school.
Read about people, places, and events with your student.
Listen to historical fiction and nonfiction audio books or podcasts together.
Watch documentaries.
Visit museums.
Go on local road trips and learn about the geography and people.
Ask questions about what you see in the world and about history.
Have discussions with your kids about what they are learning in the classroom.
Check Family Access often with your student.
Check teacher websites regularly.
Communicate with teachers about concerns.
Encourage/require your student to attend 7th period if they need or want extra help.
