6. HOW TO WRITE A RESEARCH PAPER
STEP 1: Pick your topic – DONE
Your topic has already been chosen for you.
STEP 2: Research your topic
Start with a simple Google search. When looking online, look for websites that end with .edu, or .org. Try to find articles that have an actual author. Wikipedia is not a good source to use. It is best to read all the way through articles and then to pull out quotes that support what you are trying to say.
**Don’t forget to save the web address of any site you take information from. You will need the information to cite your sources!

7. Searching the internet
Most search engines have something called an advanced search.  It allows you to be more specific about what type of information you are looking for.
“Smarter” tips for searching on the internet:
Most Internet search engines also allow you to use a set of words or symbols to narrow your search.  
AND – use this word when you want to find two words together. For example Adolf Hitler AND genocide
OR – use  this when you can accept a couple of words. For example, Adolf Hitler OR dictator
- (minus sign) – use this symbol when you want to exclude a word. For example, Adolf Hitler -death
“quotations” – use quotation marks when you are searching for an exact phrase. For example, if you were searching for a book title, you could type “The Life of Adolf Hitler” in quotations and the search engine will look for that exact phrase.

Select the box “Select All” and then continue

9. HOW TO WRITE A RESEARCH PAPER
STEP 3: Write your thesis
A thesis is an answer to the prompt. The prompt is asking you how Frankenstein influenced pop culture and science. You will follow the formula below to write your thesis. Need a little extra help?  Watch this on how to formulate a thesis statement.

10. Writing Thesis Statements
(Topic (Title/Author of text mentioned) + Claim (Your position aka how did Frankenstein influence pop culture and science) + Main Points (reasons to support- movies, TV, inventions, medical discoveries, etc) = Thesis)
Example: The monster created in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is still relevant today as it appears in movies, TV, and Halloween decorations.

11. How to write a research paper
STEP 4: Create an Outline
Once you have a thesis, you have a direction for your paper. Each body paragraph will be on one of your examples of how Frankenstein is still relevant today. Fill out the outline provided and submit to the rough draft dropbox in lesson 6.
Always wait for feedback from your teacher before moving on to writing your paper.
**If you are ready, you can access the outline through the website and start. If you need more explanation, we will go over the outline next week in our LiveLesson!

Make sure to have a quote from your research. This is a RESEARCH paper, so this part MUST be filled out!

15. How to write a research paper – looking ahead!
STEP 5: Write the paper
Adjust your outline into a full paper. Make sure you have 5 paragraphs total and correct MLA format. Your quotes should all be in quotation marks and have a citation after each quote. You should make sure your paper is clear and organized.
STEP 6: Finishing touches
Once the paper is finished, proofread your work. It is always best to have another person read through your paper to catch any mistakes you may have missed. You should be putting together a work cited page and double checking that you have correct formatting in your paper. (Please watch the LiveLesson recordings to ensure you have a correct work cited page and format.) Run your paper through CheckMyWork and add the link at the bottom. Submit your finished paper to the dropbox in lesson 10.
