1 BELLWORK: 2/4 The Cold War was mainly fought between democratic and communist countries, but what about countries that identified with neither ideology??? These countries will join together in their defiance of the U.S. and U.S.S.R. and call themselves the Non-Aligned Movement (or NAM). Read about this movement (pgs ) and answer the following  How did the US view their role in the decolonization movement? Describe U.S. actions that caused NAM to form. Describe Soviet actions that caused NAM to form. Explain the goals of NAM. How would they accomplish these goals? THINKER: Why was Abdel Nasser considered the “father” of the movement? How did Western powers view him?

2 The Non-aligned movement (N.A.M.)
The Origins and role in the cold war

3

4 Formation of NAM Founded in Belgrade in 1961
Conceived by India's first prime minister, Nehru; Indonesia's first president, Sukarno; Egypt's second president, Nasser; Ghana's first president, Nkrumah; and Yugoslavia's president, Tito. All five leaders were prominent advocates of a “middle course” for states in the developing world between the Western and Eastern Blocs during the Cold War.

6 NAM’s Current Role 120 current countries Represents 2/3 of UN members and 55% of the world population. Membership is particularly concentrated in countries considered to be “developing” or part of the “Third World” Since the NAM formed as an attempt to thwart the Cold War, it has struggled to find relevance since the Cold War ended. Many of the members of the Non-Aligned Movement are also members of the United Nations. Both organizations have a policy of peaceful cooperation, yet the successes the NAM has had with multilateral agreements tend to be ignored by the larger, western and developed-nation dominated UN

7 Members and “observer” countries

8 NAM’s Current Views Criticism of US policy: Invasion of Iraq, War on Terror, attempts to restrict Iran & NK’s nuclear plans Self-determination of Puerto Rico & Western Sahara Sustainable development: issues with globalization, debt, unfair trade and decline in foreign aid UN reforms: critical of UN structure, power dynamics, lack of transparency in decision- making Human Rights: protect cultural diversity
