1 My Name is Chrysta Let’s look at the difference in social media throughout my life and beyond

2 From Floppy disks to Flash drives
Floppy disks in 1984 UBS Flash drives in 2000 When I started school at a young age, I used floppy disks as a way to save information that I took from the internet and put it on a Microsoft Word document. As I started to grow older, the amount of information we were able to save on a portable device grew. Within just six years of making the floppy disks, people decided that they wanted a device to hold more information and was smaller in size. Flash drives was the answer and they can be attached to lanyards as well. I still use it today. I actually use two of them, one for Purdue work and another one for my unpublished books.

3 Phones Flip phones eventually changes to touch screen iPhone, which I managed to own both throughout my life. In elementary school, I remember my first flip phone. It was considered “cool” back then just to have a phone. The purpose was just to text or call someone. I couldn’t get apps on it like how I can now or touch the screen in order to do something. Flip phones first came out before I was even born, but they were still popular. Technology has certainty changed especially for iphones which were made in 2007 and are still used today. There are several tools that are provided such as a camera feature so you don’t have to go out and buy one. Google is used to look up information and you can even get games on your phone. We’re so indulged in social media that it has almost become our entire lives. You would be amazed about how many times a day someone would open their phone.

4 Blogs Six degrees Blog was one of the six degree social media sites. Six degrees was an actual site that people could agree was from the period of 1997 to This was one of the first websites that allowed people to create a profile and connect with other people online. Although I was born when the website came out I thought it was important that I added it to the history of the social media expansion.

5 Facebook 2004 February Social commerce Like Post/Share Friend
Facebook has one billion users, maybe more today. I do have an account only because I wanted to be a part of the action when it first came out. As far as I know, it has been the biggest account users in all of the social media world. Every once in a while I check the latest news. Although people seem to post, check, and like things on Facebook today. Social media, a lot like Facebook, has been increasing throughout the years .

6 April 2005 Charity Videos Message
A lot of YouTube is about sharing and posting as well. It was made not that long after Facebook, but YouTube was more about sending videos out. I spend a lot of time just listening to music while I study or watching videos for entertainment. I know a lot of people who consider YouTube a job. The more videos that they send out, the more people like, and the more people subscribe to their channel, the more they get paid. I spend on an average of 8 hours a day on it, so this class is teaching me to thinking about social media in ways which I never have before.

7 Pinterest March 2010 Business
Later in the timeline came Pinterest, where you could show off images of your business. In the image above shows someone who could cook really well and someone who might want to become a chief. Anyone who might be interest in hiring you or if you’re interested in selling your work then you can just log into Pinterest, show off what you could do within the snap of your fingers.

8 Computers April 2010 2016 Times have changed from the very first old computer that you might have found in a library compared to the touch screen laptops that you can carry around to college or work. The very first computer was released in the year of 1946, but slowly evolved into the laptops we have now. A lot of families have more than one computer in their home as of today. It is no different than with me. I’ve started to adapt to the evolving world of the internet. I’ve gotten a new laptop recently to help increase the speed of how I can look things up.

9 Twitter 2011 Hashtags Communication is faster
Twitter is a part of social media that allows people to communicate short messages to one another. Each of these social media sites allow people to share what they are feeling or to promote something they like or dislike. According to the figure 1.1 in Social Media Marketing book, there are 5,700 tweets that are posted every second. Although I do not have a Twitter account, I thought of making one just because it seemed “cool” at the time. Twitter stands out because all of the tweets can go to anyone in the Twitter world.

10 Instagram 2011 Made in the same year as Twitter, Instagram began to arise. Instagram was specifically for taking pictures and they can stay on the site for as long as you want them too. Sometimes a person can put a picture on and send it to a person and it would only last for a few seconds. I do not have an Instagram account, but I wasn’t too eager to sent up one. Each one of these social media sites are almost the same with a little bit of difference to each one.

11 Turn back time From all the social media sites that I mentioned before, there was more apps, online spacing that information can be sent back and forth. I’m sure that the future will make more and people will get hooked on it from the start. I wonder if we could turn back time, would we do things differently? Could there have been an alternative for the use on the internet?

12 Relation to time spent on Social Media
The older generation of our time is even spending time on some form of the internet’s social media. It is impacting everyone in the world. I would say that I balance between the two highest time spend on the internet which are desktop and smartphone app.

13 What you can find on the internet
Webpages (.com/.org/.gov) Information How to… Why is… Images News Shopping Videos More On the positive side of things, the internet and all its social media sites provide a good amount of the list of things above.

14 Minimize amount of Social Media time
Goals Spend more time off the internet when not needed Make time for real face to face interactions rather than spending it behind a screen Take what I can from this class to provide a healthy relationship with the social media

15 Predictions for new generations
Social Media expansion Communication will only be only available online No reason to leave our homes, online jobs will engulf us No reason for schools without online classes, almost all of the classes would be online

16 Summary Having a healthy balance between spending time on the internet and having real life relationships The adaptation/evolution of the social media has provided a way for people to have information right at their fingertips Seeing how the social media has changed through my eyes
