Human Factors Defined Human Factors discovers and applies information about human behavior, abilities, limitations, and other characteristics to the design of tools, machines, systems, tasks, jobs, and environments for productive, safe, comfortable, and effective human use (Sanders and McCormick, 1993) Human Factors IS NOT … When I tell people I am an human factors engineer, they either say what is that? Or they say, oh you design office furniture or the interior of cars. While HFE have worked on these two issues, human factors is more than that. Human Human Factors is not: Just using checklists and guidelines Just using oneself as the model for designing things Just common sense The objectives of HF are 1) Enhance the effectiveness and efficiency with which work is carried out (such as reduced errors and increased productivity, and to enhance certain desirable human values including improved safety, reduced fatigue and stress, greater user acceptance, improved quality of life. Human Factors got its start with the developments in technology. IN the 1900s Frank and Lillian Gilbreth began work in time and motion study. They looked at skilled performance and fatigue. Their analysis of hospital surgical teams resulted in the procedure used today where a surgeon obtains an instrument by calling for it and extending their hands. Their study showed surgeons were spending as much time looking for instruments as they did looking at the patient. The birth of the profession really occurred during WWII. There are now 5000 members of the National HF&E Society There are societies all over the world. Just using checklists and guidelines Just using oneself as the model for designing things Just common sense

Cost of Ignoring Human Factors is Poor Quality!
Increased probability of accidents and errors Less spare capacity to deal with emergencies Increased labor turnover Lower productive output Increases in lost time Higher medical costs Higher material costs Increased absenteeism Low quality work Injuries, strains HFE is directly related to quality because the ignoring HFE results in a variety of problems within a systems such as Increased probability of accidents and errors Less spare capacity to deal with emergencies Increased labor turnover Lower productive output Increases in lost time Higher medical costs Higher material costs Increased absenteeism Low quality work Injuries, strains
