Construct a Box-and-Whisker Plot
ENVIRONMENT Use the data in the table below to construct a box-and-whisker plot. Example 1

Construct a Box-and-Whisker Plot
Find the measures of variation and the least and greatest value in the data. The least value in the data is The lower quartile is The median is The upper quartile is The greatest value is 95.5. The interquartile range is 81.8 – 63.9 or 17.9. Multiply the interquartile range by 1.5 = 26.85 Example 1
6
Construct a Box-and-Whisker Plot
Since there are no values less than the lower quartile or greater than the upper quartile, there are no outliers in the data. Draw the box-and-whisker plot. Step 1 Draw a number line that includes the least and greatest numbers in the data. Example 1
7
Construct a Box-and-Whisker Plot
Step 2 Mark the extremes, the median, and the upper and lower quartile above the number line. Check for outliers. If an outlier exists, mark the greatest value that is not an outlier. Use an asterisk (*) to indicate an outlier. It is not connected to a whisker. Step 3 Draw the box and the whiskers. lower quartile upper quartile median minimum value maximum value Example 1

ENTERTAINMENT Use the data below to construct a box-and-whisker plot
ENTERTAINMENT Use the data below to construct a box-and-whisker plot. prices of movie tickets: $8.50, $7.00, $12.00, $9.50, $9.00, $8.00, $8.50, $7.00, $6.00, $4.00 A. B. C. D. Example 1 CYP

Interpret Data WATERFALLS What does the length of the box-and-whisker plot tell you about the data? Answer: Data in the second quartile are slightly more spread out than the data in the third quartile. You can see that data in the fourth quartile are more spread out because the whisker is longer than the other parts of the plot. Example 2

ENVIRONMENT What does the length of the box-and-whisker plot tell you about the data?
Environmental Performance Index A. Data in the first quartile are more spread out than the data in the second quartile. B. Data in second quartile are more spread out than the data in the first quartile. C. Data in third quartile are more spread out than the data in the first quartile. D. Data in fourth quartile are less spread out than the data in the third quartile. Example 2 CYP
