Mark 15:1–20 Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. 2 Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, “It is as you say.”
19
Mark 15:1–20 3 The chief priests began to accuse Him harshly. 4 Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!” 5 But Jesus made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed.
20
Mark 15:1–20 6 Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. 7 The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. 8 The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.
21
Mark 15:1–20 9 Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.
22
Mark 15:1–20 12 Answering again, Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13 They shouted back, “Crucify Him!” 14 But Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!”
23
Mark 14:12–25 15 Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified. 16 The soldiers took Him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called together the whole Roman cohort.
24
Mark 15:1–20 17 They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; 18 and they began to acclaim Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 They kept beating His head with a reed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him.
25
Mark 15:1–20 20 After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.

Jesus, Our Substitute Jesus will suffer, and He will be silent before trumped up charges, but He is not passive on the way to the cross. He is doggedly, determined to give Himself as a substitute, a payment for our sin, to be punished in our place – something only He is qualified to do as the Sovereign King, Silent Lamb, and Sinless Son of the Father.
27
Sermon in a Sentence To appreciate who Jesus is and what He has done for us: 1) we must understand Jesus is the King of the Jews, the King of Creation; 2) we must not mistake Jesus’ silence for weakness; 3) we must be released from death row by Jesus, God’s sinless Son (6–14); and 4) we must offer Him the worship He is due (15–20).
28
Jesus, Our Substitute 1. We must recognize Jesus is the Sovereign King of the Jews, the King of all Creation (1–2).
29
Jesus, Our Substitute Ancient primary sources confirm Pilate was the Roman procurator of Judea from 26–36AD. The Bible has consistently been shown to be historically accurate.
30
Jesus, Our Substitute They began to accuse Him saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.” Luke 23:2
31
The charge that sticks is true: Jesus is King of the Jews.
Jesus, Our Substitute The charge that sticks is true: Jesus is King of the Jews.
32
Jesus, Our Substitute The meaning of what Jesus says is this: “You would do well to consider the question” (Edwards, 459).
33
Jesus, Our Substitute “on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, ‘KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS’” (Rev 19:16).
34
Jesus, Our Substitute The only reason Pilate has the authority to question Jesus is that He allows it.
35
Jesus, Our Substitute No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. John 10:18
36
2. We must not mistake Jesus’ silence for weakness (3–5).
Jesus, Our Substitute 2. We must not mistake Jesus’ silence for weakness (3–5).
37
Jesus, Our Substitute Jesus remains silent and takes the punishment of the guilty, so the guilty may go free.
38
Jesus, Our Substitute His silence is not weakness, and it is not inaction. It is incredible self-awareness, self-control, and strength.
39
Jesus, Our Substitute Pilate is amazed (5).
40
Jesus, Our Substitute “Sinful men can only watch in amazement. No defense. Not a word. He will see to it that He goes to the cross” (Akin, 345).
41
Jesus, Our Substitute 3. We must be released from death row by Jesus, God’s sinless Son (6–14).
42
Jesus, Our Substitute Pilate is not convinced Jesus is a threat or that He is guilty, and he thinks he sees a way out of this pickle
43
Jesus, Our Substitute While Peter has denied Jesus three times, Pilate advocates for Him three times.
44
Jesus, Our Substitute In v. 9, he says, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” In v. 12, Pilate again asks, “what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” In v. 14, as they shout “crucify Him,” Pilate says, “Why, what evil has he done?”
45
“I find no guilt Him.” -Pilate in John 18:38
Jesus, Our Substitute “I find no guilt Him.” -Pilate in John 18:38
46
Jesus, Our Substitute God knew that Pilate, like many politicians today, would only side with Jesus as long as it was politically expedient to do so.
47
Jesus, Our Substitute Why the mention of Barabbas? Isn’t this story is about the crucifixion of Jesus?
48
Jesus, Our Substitute With His silence, Jesus shouts, “Father take Me, and release Barabbas!”
49
Barabbas means “son of a father.”
Jesus, Our Substitute Barabbas means “son of a father.”
50
Jesus, Our Substitute Adam’s insurrection against God in the Garden is in the heart of every man.
51
Every single one of us has daddy issues that our daddy cannot solve.
Jesus, Our Substitute Every single one of us has daddy issues that our daddy cannot solve.
52
Jesus, Our Substitute As Judah Smith says, “Jesus knew the Father would have to treat Jesus like Barabbas so He could treat Barabbas like Jesus.”
53
Jesus, Our Substitute The Father punished His Son to be able to withhold punishment from you.
54
Jesus, Our Substitute “Your greatest challenge is not your discipline, your devotion, your focus. Your greatest challenge is believing the gospel.” -Judah Smith
55
Jesus, Our Substitute Have you ever seen what they were all too blind to notice?” Ferguson, Mark, 257
56
4. We must offer Him the worship He is due (15–20).
Jesus, Our Substitute 4. We must offer Him the worship He is due (15–20).
57
Jesus, Our Substitute “The scourging lacerated and stripped the flesh, often exposing bone and entrails” (Edwards, 464).
58
Jesus, Our Substitute Everyone (except Jesus) is guilty – the religious leaders have hit Him and ignored due process or the need for consistent testimony and witnesses, the crowd has called for His crucifixion, Pilate has chosen his own political career at the price of crucifying an innocent man, and now the military mocks and beats and already beaten man.
59
Jesus, Our Substitute “The crown of thorns pictured God’s curse on sinful humanity now being put on Jesus” (Gen 3:17–18).
60
Jesus, Our Substitute They believe they are mocking Jesus, but, even as they mock, they declare the truth of who Jesus is with their mouths and with their actions.
61
Jesus, Our Substitute “Yes, yes I am. I am the King of the Jews, and soon, the nations will not kneel and bow before Me as those who mock but as those who mourn the sin that put Me here, those who rejoice that I have died to set them free, and those who gladly follow Me as King.”
63
Grace Greater Than All Our Sin
64
Marvelous grace Of our loving Lord Grace that exceeds Our sin and our guilt Yonder on Calvary’s Mount outpoured There where the blood Of the Lamb was spilt
65
Grace Grace God’s grace
Grace that will pardon And cleanse within Grace that is greater Than all our sin
66
Dark is the stain That we cannot hide What can avail To wash it away Look! There is flowing A crimson tide Whiter than snow You may be today
67
Grace Grace God’s grace
Grace that will pardon And cleanse within Grace that is greater Than all our sin
68
Marvelous Infinite Matchless Grace Freely bestowed On all who believe All who are longing To see His face Will you this moment His grace receive
69
Grace Grace God’s grace
Grace that will pardon And cleanse within Grace that is greater Than all our sin

Death Was Arrested
77
Alone in my sorrow and dead in my sin
Lost without hope with no place to begin Your love made a way to let mercy come in When death was arrested and my life began
78
Ash was redeemed only beauty remains My orphan heart was given a name
My mourning grew quiet my feet rose to dance When death was arrested and my life began
79
Oh Your grace so free washes over me
You have made me new now life begins with You It's Your endless love pouring down on us You have made us new now life begins with You
80
Released from my chains I'm a prisoner no more
My shame was a ransom He faithfully bore He cancelled my debt and He called me His friend When death was arrested and my life began
81
Oh Your grace so free washes over me
You have made me new now life begins with You It's Your endless love pouring down on us You have made us new now life begins with You
82
Our Savior displayed on a criminal's cross
Darkness rejoiced as though Heaven had lost But then Jesus arose with our freedom in hand That's when death was arrested and my life began
83
Oh Your grace so free washes over me
You have made me new now life begins with You It's Your endless love pouring down on us You have made us new now life begins with You
84
Oh we're free free forever we're free
Come join the song of all the redeemed Yes we're free free forever amen When death was arrested and my life began

Till my guilty soul imploring turned
By God’s Word at last My sin I learned Then I trembled At the law I’d spurned Till my guilty soul imploring turned To Calvary

There Your mercy and Your grace was free
There Your pardon multiplied to me There my burdened soul found liberty at Calvary
