Romans 16:17-19 Marking Dividers
We use the expression “a Romans 14 issue” when we are in disagreement over something that is not consequential to our faith. What does this mean?

Church Discipline "If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.” Matthew 18:15-17

Church Discipline Reject a factious man after a first and second warning, knowing that such a man is perverted and is sinning, being self-condemned Titus 3:10
10
Church Discipline Churches must practice discipline with members To offer correction to those in error 2 Timothy 2:25 Galatians 6:1 2Ti 2:25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, Ga 6:1 ¶ Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
11
Church Discipline Churches must practice discipline with members To offer admonition to those straying 1 Thessalonians 5:14 1 Corinthians 4:14 Romans 15:4 1Th 5:14 We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone 1Co 4:14 ¶ I do not write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children. Ro 15:14 ¶ And concerning you, my brethren, I myself also am convinced that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able also to admonish one another.
12
Church Discipline Churches must practice discipline with members
To separate from those who refuse to submit Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from every brother who leads an unruly life and not according to the tradition which you received from us Thessalonians 3:6 1Th 5:14 We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone 1Co 4:14 ¶ I do not write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children. Ro 15:14 ¶ And concerning you, my brethren, I myself also am convinced that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able also to admonish one another.
13
Church Discipline Churches must practice discipline with members
To separate from those who refuse to submit But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler--not even to eat with such a one Corinthians 5:11 1Th 5:14 We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone 1Co 4:14 ¶ I do not write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children. Ro 15:14 ¶ And concerning you, my brethren, I myself also am convinced that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able also to admonish one another.

Church Discipline Churches must practice discipline with members
To separate from those who refuse to submit If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he will be put to shame Thessalonians 3:14

Church Discipline Churches must practice discipline with members
To separate from those who refuse to submit We do NOT separate from serial sinning 1 John 1:8-10 2 Corinthians 2:5 Matthew 18:21 1Jo 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us 2Co 2:5 But if any has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow not to me, but in some degree--in order not to say too much--to all of you. 6 Sufficient for such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority, 7 so that on the contrary you should rather forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a one might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. Mt 18:21 Then Peter came and said to Him, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?" 22 Jesus *said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

Church Discipline Churches must practice discipline with members We do not practice this with non-members We mark those who walk falsely outside us 1Jo 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Marking The Divisor Paul’s directive: Mark (skopeo) One who causes dissensions (division) Avoid them “turn away from them” (NASB) 1Jo 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. Marking The Divisor Those who teach otherwise 2 Timothy 6:3-5
1Ti 6:3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, 4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, 5 useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.
20
Marking The Divisor Those who teach otherwise 2 Timothy 6:3-5 Those who bring destructive division 2 Peter 2:1 2Pe 2:1 ¶ But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. .
21
Marking The Divisor Those who teach otherwise 2 Timothy 6:3-5 Those who bring destructive division 2 Peter 2:1 Those who do not bring the doctrine of Christ 2 John 9-11 2Jo 1:9 Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. 10 ¶ If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; 11 for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.

The Difficulty in the Command
It seems divisive and hateful Brethren are focused on just one or two issues Good teachers are cast aside Mean spirited It violates church autonomy Darby Bible Translation - But I commend to you Phoebe, our sister, who is minister of the assembly which is in Cenchrea;
23
The Difficulty in the Command
It seems divisive and hateful It seems counter productive It causes more division than unity No one will come back if we do this Darby Bible Translation - But I commend to you Phoebe, our sister, who is minister of the assembly which is in Cenchrea;
24
The Difficulty in the Command
We see many reasons not to do this; There is reallyonly one reason to do it: God said to do it.
25
Obedience Sometimes we must discipline our members Sometimes we must mark others and avoid them It is difficult and unpleasant It is God’s will that we do this
