Motivating Deployment Study in Nairobi, Kenya evaluating the effect of two-way versus one-way SMS messaging on a pregnant woman’s engagement with the health system. The Mobile WaCH application is a web application that allows for bi-directional manual messages and prescheduled automated messages Possible Applications Messaging The underlying web application is built to adapt to different projects with a variety of messaging requirements. The system is easily deployable in different countries using a local SMS gateway. Medication reminders for chronic diseases. Two-way communication between health facilities. Public health awareness and notifications. Research study participant communication. Non-health contexts (e.g., agriculture, education) Automated messages can be scheduled relative to: Client enrolment Estimated delivery Next scheduled visit Actual delivery Messages can also be contextualized: Personalized with the woman’s name Delivered on the requested day of the week at the requested time Customized based on medical condition Mobile WaCH: RCT for Maternal Health Screening for eligibility Randomization Control group (n=100) Usual ANC care One -Way SMS (n=100) Weekly motivational SMS text Baseline data collection Follow up (2, 10, 24 weeks): SMS Dialogue (n=100) Weekly SMS dialogue SMS access to nurse Location: Mathare North Health Centre, Nairobi, Kenya Participants: 300 pregnant women, 100 per treatment group Timeline: Pre-study pilot in progress, trial begins July 1 Technology: Using a shortcode, women SMS for free MOBILE WaCH Antenatal Care Facility Delivery Exclusive Breastfeeding Family Planning Infant Immunizations Antepartum Intrapartum Postpartum/Neonatal Reproductive Continuum “Smart” system – personalization with automation Culturally appropriate SMS linked to behavior Interactive ANC visits Infant feeding practices Delivery Contraception uptake Infant immunizations Retention change.washington.edu
