12 Having Joy Matthew 5

13 Pursuing Happiness “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness” What is happiness? Fortunate happenstance Is seeking happiness a pursuit of “good luck”? Hap means fortune, luck or treasure. Thus one who is “hapless” is unlucky The United States is obsessed with happiness (same goes for a number of other countries in the world). There are cultural pressures to be happy. Go on amazon.com and look at how many books have happiness in the title. Go on Google and plug in “happiness coaching.” Look at how many people are waiting by their phone for you to cough up cash to learn to be happier. There are even university degrees that can teach you to teach people to be happier (for only $40,000 per year)! (Note: there is more money to be made training trainers than being a happiness trainer). Has anyone considered what this pressure to be happy does to people?

14 Pursuing Happiness Viktor Frankl [Herwig Prammer/Reuters] – Concentration camp survivor – parents, wife, children all lost in camps In 1991, the Library of Congress and Book-of-the-Month Club listed Man's Search for Meaning as one of the 10 most influential books in the United States “freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness. That is why I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast” Source of quotes -

15 Pursuing Happiness "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing -- the last of the human freedoms -- to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." In 1991, the Library of Congress and Book-of-the-Month Club listed Man's Search for Meaning as one of the 10 most influential books in the United States

16 Pursuing Happiness “He (who) knows the "why" for his existence ….. will be able to bear almost any "how."

17 Pursuing Happiness "it is a characteristic of the American culture that, again and again, one is commanded and ordered to 'be happy.' But happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue. One must have a reason to 'be happy.'"

18 "It is the very pursuit of happiness, that thwarts happiness."
Pursuing Happiness "It is the very pursuit of happiness, that thwarts happiness."

Matthew 5:3-12 Jesus’ point: These characteristics are NOT what we would call happy; mourning, hurting, being persecuted, being weak, ; others merely sound like being good – obedient, humble, purity, peaceful
