Parts of a Cell And their functions
2
Organelles the small structures that make up a cell
each organelle performs a special function to help the cell do its job for the organism.
3
Cell Membrane forms outer boundary of cell surrounds cytoplasm
Separates the cell from its environment
4
Nucleus largest organelle
made up of 3 parts: nuclear membrane = thin layer that surrounds the nucleus; contains pores to let materials in and out chromosomes = thin threadlike structures made up of DNA Tells the ribosomes what to make nucleolus = makes ribosomes (which make proteins)
5
Cytoplasm found inside the cell membrane but outside the nucleus
clear, thick, jellylike material; contains a large amount of water (about 70%) and chemicals contains all the organelles outside of the nucleus
6
Golgi Bodies found in cytoplasm
sort and modify proteins from the ER to do different jobs
7
Mitochondria scattered throughout cytoplasm
produces energy from the sugar (glucose) in food called the “powerhouse” of the cell cells that are more active will have more mitochondria (ex. muscle cells) Protects DNA
8
Lysosomes found in cytoplasm
small, round structures filled with digestive chemicals called enzymes break down large food (sugar) molecules into small ones so they can enter the mitochondria digest waste products, worn out organelles, and dead or injured cells to make room for new cells protect the cell from foreign invaders
9
Centrioles and Microtubules
Near the nucleus - help the cell when it comes time to divide
10
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
extends from the nuclear membrane to the cell folded, tube-like membrane rough ER has ribosomes on it smooth ER lacks ribosomes acts like a conveyor belt or passageway for proteins
11
Ribosomes most are attached to the ER (making rough ER); some float freely in cytoplasm to make protein DNA tells ribosomes which proteins to make
12
What is DNA?
13
Have your DNA and eat it too!
