This is how it looks on the task sheet

To begin …..... Watch, think and discuss
Write in your blue book Who are the characters in the clip? As you are watching this, write a thought script for the lady – we will read some out What issue is being covered in this clip? Can you write an alternative script that would erase discriminatory thoughts Watch the children carefully in this clip – do the girls pick up pink and the boys pick up blue? What is the issue being raised in this clip Why do you think using children so young is a good idea in an expt like this What do you think about this issue?

What is the definition of discrimination??
On a white board What is the definition of discrimination?? The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.
6
P2 – discrimination Direct discrimination Indirect discrimination
Overt individuals openly discriminate against others. Occurs when it is obvious by words or actions of an individual that they are deliberately disadvantaging against another person. E.g. Within a care setting giving preferential treatment to some groups or denying treatment to other groups or being paid less because you are male/female This is not as obvious (Covert), it may even be unintentional. It is when certain conditions are in place that demonstrates a preference for some people over others. Rules and regulations make it impossible for a person belonging to a specific group to fully participate in society. Difficult to prove, because it is not obvious that this is what is happening. Eg. telling a joke to a work colleague about a Jewish person

Discrimination in action ….
More women than men suffer from harassment and bullying True/False Calling someone by a nickname is not a form of bullying Bullying can be in written form Giving an individual a ‘label’ can negatively affect the care they will receive Using power to discriminate against others is acceptable if done covertly It is acceptable not to let service users know about some facilities that might be available to them if there is no funding available to support the provision of the service Stereotyping is a form of prejudice Decisions are made in the health and social care sector only after meeting the individual Telling jokes is not a form of bullying All forms of discrimination are forms of abuse Stress, due to a work overload, can contribute to abusive situations occurring A manager is allowed to favour individual staff over others Discrimination in action …. Starter activity - true or false – on whiteboards Are there any words you don’t understand on that sheet? Write them down on your whiteboard, add to your glossary...... Choose one of these answers that surprise you / shock you? Be prepared to tell us about it.

Timeline for legislation linking to Discrimination
Between 1950 and 2006 there were laws and regulations concerning discrimination against people. Why is it useful to have an understanding of this?? We need to cover all 16 of these laws and regulations and build a timeline to show how they have developed over the years. On the back of the flash card --> write who the act/regulation relates to --> what type of discrimination is it protecting that person from --> how does it ensure discrimination doesn’t occur You'll need your computers up!
