Audio Review Most of the Final Exam will be focused on ‘Basic Media Production’ – audio and video. Test 4 will focus on lighting and sound. This is an audio review that helps you prepare for the audio part of Test 4 and the Final.
2
A mic that is capable of responding well to all the frequencies in the whole audio spectrum is said to have a response flat
3
As an audio signal processing device, a(n) ------- shrinks the dynamic range of an audio signal
compressor
4
What is the type of microphone used in television which is worn attached to clothing
lavaliere
5
The type of microphone that is also known as a dynamic mic.
Moving coil
6
In measuring sound waves, the area where the air molecules become more spread apart / pushed together Rarefaction/ compression
7
Omnidirectional/ nondirectional
What is the polar pattern of a microphone that picks up sound from all directions? Omnidirectional/ nondirectional
8
Device that boosts low-level signals (like from a professional mic) to usable proportions before they reach the amplifier Pre-amp
9
Sound frequency spectrum / audio frequencies
The term for the range of frequencies audible to human hearing: about 16 to 16,000 hertz Sound frequency spectrum / audio frequencies
10
The ‘gauge’ on an audio board that shows the loudness levels coming through the board
VU meter
11
The name for the type of analog audio connector ...
RCA/phono, 1/4”/phone, mini-plug, XLR (see pictures in reading)
12
Later reflections of sound waves in an acoustical space—those that are the result of early reflections of sound waves becoming smaller and smaller and the time between them decreasing until they combine, are referred to as what? reverberation
13
The number of cycles that a sound vibration completes in one second
frequency
14
A device that performs the function of converting energy from one form to another, as in from acoustical to electrical energy transducer
15
The common name for ‘volume controls’ on each channel of the audio board.
Faders OR pots
16
A mode of console operation in which audio can be channeled and played through the monitor without that audio going out over the air audition
17
The name for the type of audio connector ...
XLR -- jack left / plug right
18
The electrical imprint of a sound signal on a radio wave or carrier wave
modulation
19
The functions of the audio console
Amplifying, routing, mixing, balancing, switching
20
The term for the type of audio recording in which the fluctuations and changes of the electric wave pattern correspond to the fluctuations and changes in the original sound pressure analog
21
The number of cycles that a sound vibration completes in one second
frequency
22
On an audio mixing board, the system that shuts off the monitor when the mic is on.
muting
23
The objective study of the physical behavior of received sound.
acoustics
24
The loudspeaker in an audio control room, used typically to listen to what is in program.
monitor
25
Of the functions of the console, the one referring to determining the path of the signal.
routing
26
The term for p-popping—in class we called them ----, when picked up by a mic.
plosives
27
The prominent ‘s’ ‘sh’ and ‘ch’ sounds picked up by a microphone
sibilance
28
The type of microphone that requires a power source to operate.
Capacitor / condensor
29
The two means by which condensor mics are powered.
Battery or phantom power
30
‘Mic +48v’ on the camera tells you what about that setting related to the mic input?
That it must be a condensor mic if set this way, and it’s phantom power
31
Digital audio workstation
DAW stands for ----- Digital audio workstation
32
The measure of the loudness of sound; the height of the sine wave
amplitude
33
Amplitude is measured in ----, and when referring to loudness in an acoustical space would be abbreviated ---- Decibels ; dBspl Vs. dBv or dBm
34
Sound levels in an acoustical space are measured from the lowest end, or threshhold of to the highest end, or threshhold of ----. Hearing ; pain
35
The range of loudness from lowest to highest levels, or the range of loudness that a microphone or other equipment can handle is referred to as ---- range. dynamic
36
The unique tonal quality of a sound is its ---, which the book says is when the overtones vibrate at different degrees of loudness according to the resonating qualities of each voice or musical instrument. timbre
37
Used when a mic needs to be suspended over a performer, such as while shooting sit-coms, dramas, and soap operas. boom
38
In digital encoding, the number of ones and zeroes used to represent a discrete moment of sound, such as an 8-bit word or 16-bit word, is referred to as the level. quantizing
39
The ---- rate in digital encoding of audio is ‘how many times per second analog information is converted to the ones and zeroes of digital technology. sampling
40
Sound waves traveling in an environment, when striking a surface will be partially or mostly absorbed or partially of mostly reflected
41
Occasionally hitting the red
When speaking into a mic or when playing music through a CD player or computer, the needle or light on a VU meter should be ----- Occasionally hitting the red
42
In digital video editing, the audio levels typically peak at ____ and must not go above _____
-6 to -3 dB O dB
43
Instead of distant miking for people speaking on camera, we must use a miking technique or later re-record and insert the dialogue. close
44
(automated dialogue replacement
In movie making, about half the dialogue cannot be close miked, requiring re-recording and inserting replacement audio, a process called: ADR / Looping (automated dialogue replacement
45
HD Radio, In Band on Channel, U.S. HD Radio, Hybrid Digital
The iBiquity company and now dts are associated with IBOC stands for and is the method for what service? HD letters originally stood for ---- HD Radio, In Band on Channel, U.S. HD Radio, Hybrid Digital
46
kHz, MHz and GHz stand for ----
kilo / mega / giga hertz
47
What are the three parts of the sound frequency spectrum?
Bass, midrange, treble
48
This is a lot of audio, but not everything…
