GMP Protocol definition for Missing
MISSING Person – ‘Anyone whose whereabouts cannot be established and where the circumstances are out of character, or the context suggests the person may be the subject of crime or at risk of harm to themselves or another’ “Hidden missing’, Children who are not reported to the police but have come to an agency’s attention from accessing other services, they maybe missing from education or trafficked children/young people for example, (Dfe 2013)

Ask the audience how, in their view CSE might affect all concerned. Write on a Flip chart in their groups for 10 minutes.

Impact on the Child/Young person
Physical health: Bruises, cuts, broken teeth Alcoholism Addiction to drugs Self-harm including cutting, overdosing and eating disorders Sexual and reproductive health: Sexually transmitted infections such as HIV and chlamydia Pregnancy, miscarriage, multiple termination, ’backstreet’ abortion Psychological health: Suicidal tendencies Severe depression Nightmares, flashbacks Anxiety Violent aggression towards others, including siblings, parents and pets. Social health: Criminal activity encouraged by perpetrators which leads to a criminal record. Loss of childhood friends Lack of trust in agencies and professionals Dropping out of school Unable to trust future partners Unemployment Teenage parenthood

Attention seeking behaviours Bullying at school Over protection from parents Isolation Parents –Relationships/Work/General worries: Arguments Parents set against each other Lack of understanding from family Divorce Lack of concentration at work, frequent absenteeism with potential loss of job Fear of abuse, violence, damage of property Lack of sleep Paranoia Stigma Financial pressures

Truancy/ Low achievement/lack of education and qualifications Change of schools Exclusion Parenting orders Lack of awareness Health Agency: Visits to A&E GU Clinics Psychologists Psychiatrists Challenges to information sharing Voluntary and Semi-governmental Agencies: Drugs & Alcohol Housing YOS Children Services: Family assessments leading possibly to child protection plans, court orders Threat to family unit Foster carers/children’s homes/secure units Police: Lack of evidence/convictions Different officers House searches

Going missing from home is also the most immediate indicator of vulnerability to exploitation ( CSE, Gangs, Organised Crime etc) It is an issue that effects males and females
