York (white rose) and Lancaster (red rose) Started in England during the 100 Years War when Henry Bolingbroke (Henry IV) overthrow and imprisoned the young King Richard II with the help of John of Gaunt Picks up steam at the end of the 100 Years War—1453—after that basically 35 years of English Civil War Henry VI becomes king, then Edward IV, the Henry, then Ed then Henry again, etc. Then Richard III kills everyone including his brother and two young nephews to become king…. 5 Early Tudors Arguably the most (comically) dysfunctional family in history, but didn’t start that way After winning at Bosworth, Henry VII (a distant Lancastrian) marries Elizabeth of York to unite the two families and end of the War of the Roses He his a very good king: keeps England out of war (save taking out Ireland) + builds up the state’s treasury + pays back debt + amasses more wealth patronizes art + supports Catholic Church = Beloved by people and church Has a very respectable and beloved oldest son name Arthur, who had a nice wife (Catherine of Aragon) and died suddenly at 15
