Fitness and You
2
Elements of Fitness Cardiorespiratory endurance – the ability of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to utilize and send fuel and oxygen to the body’s tissues during long periods of moderate-to-vigorous activity Muscular Strength – the amount of force a muscle can exert Muscle Endurance – the ability of the muscles to perform physical tasks over a period of time without becoming fatigued
3
Elements of Fitness Flexibility – the ability to move a body part through a full range of motion Body composition – the ratio of body fat to lean body tissue, including muscle, bone, water, and connective tissue such as ligaments, cartilage, and tendons
4
How Do You Improve Those Elements?
By knowing your strengths and weaknesses, you can take steps to improve your physical fitness through __________. Exercise – purposeful physical activity that is planned, structured, and repetitive and that improves or maintains personal fitness EXERCISE
5
Why is Each Element Important?
Cardiorespiratory Endurance Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. By keeping the cardiovascular system healthy, you reduce the risk of developing this life-threatening disease.
6
Why is Each Element Important?
Muscular Strength and Endurance These elements give you the necessary power to carry out your daily tasks without becoming fatigued. More likely to have better posture and fewer back problems.
7
Why is Each Element Important?
Flexibility Flexibility can increase your athletic performance, help you feel more comfortable, and reduce the risk of muscle strains and other injuries. Flexibility also can help prevent lower back problems.
8
Why is Each Element Important?
Body Composition Improving body composition improves the way you look and feel, helps you avoid the health problems of being overweight, and reduces stress on the skeletal system. Males > 25% body fat / Females > 30 % body fat - At risk of developing cardiovascular problems

Improving Your Fitness
Most exercises fall into two categories – aerobic or anaerobic Aerobic – any activity that uses large muscle groups, is rhythmic in nature, and can be maintained continuously Anaerobic – intense short bursts of activity in which the muscles work so hard that they produce energy without using oxygen
10
Improving Your Fitness
Improving Cardiorespiratory Endurance Aerobic exercise increases heart rate Heart pumps more oxygen to muscles As the heart muscle strengthens, it pumps blood more efficiently Increases the lungs’ capacity to hold air
11
Improving Your Fitness
Increasing Muscular Strength and Endurance Anaerobic exercises such as resistance and strength training builds and strengthens muscles Keeps blood sugar and cholesterol levels normal
12
Improving Your Fitness
Improving Flexibility Regular stretching exercises Improving and Maintaining Bone Strength Calcium Weight-bearing exercises/resistance training Bone mass begins to decline during a person’s late twenties and early thirties
