The Mouth: Blasphemy Jas 3:2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. 3 Now if we put the bits into the horses' mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. 4 Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. 5 So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

The Evil of Blasphemy Cursing has two concepts: Blasphemy Cursing others Both involve drawing God into a conflict

Blasphemy Blasphemy – false blessings Calling on God in vain Leviticus 24:10-16 In Hebrew, “Bless” and “Blaspheme” are the same In Greek, blaspheme means to speak hurtfully Anything that lowers God’s stature Example: Golden Calf (Nehemiah 9:18) Le 24:10 ¶ Now the son of an Israelite woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the sons of Israel; and the Israelite woman's son and a man of Israel struggled with each other in the camp. 11 The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name and cursed. So they brought him to Moses. (Now his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.) 12 They put him in custody so that the command of the LORD might be made clear to them. 13 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 14 "Bring the one who has cursed outside the camp, and let all who heard him lay their hands on his head; then let all the congregation stone him. 15 "You shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'If anyone curses his God, then he will bear his sin. 16 'Moreover, the one who blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him. The alien as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.

Blasphemy Blasphemy is related to cursing Cursing: to condemn something Cursing invokes the authority of God Simply stated, it is cursing when we say: “Damnation” or any variation thereof “Go to hell”
10
The Evil of Blasphemy The evil of blasphemy is making God common Turning Him into a mere exclamation Taking something holy and making it common Leviticus 10:8-10 Ezekiel 22:26 Le 10:9 "Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, 10 "that you may distinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean, Eze 22:26 "Her priests have violated My law and profaned My holy things; they have not distinguished between the holy and unholy, nor have they made known the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they have hidden their eyes from My Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.
11
The Evil of Cursing The evil of cursing is in part making God common It is also evil for asking God to curse others James 3:9-10 James 4:11-12 Jas 3:9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Jas 4:11 ¶ Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?
12
Invoking God Carelessly
Ecclesiastes 5:1-7 Calling God without purpose is deadly . Ga 5:26 Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.
13
Calling on God with Grace
Praising God in various ways: Songs Prayer The priestly offerings of Christians Hebrews 13:15 1 Peter 2:9 Heb 13:15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. 1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
15
Condemnation by God There is also an antitype which now saves us-- baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Peter 3:21
16
Praised by God "Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?‘ And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness’” Matthew 7:22-23
