1
Aim: How do we describe motion using the concepts of speed and velocity?
2
Do Now: Calculate the distance. Calculate the displacement.
3
Average Speed and Average Velocity
Average speed is distance/time. Average velocity is displacement/time. v=d/t How must an object move so that its average speed and average velocity be equal?
4
Max the Motion of the Objects with the Correct Speeds
Speed of Light Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird (Fastest Airplane) NASA’s Juno Probe (Fastest Spacecraft) Usain Bolt (Fastest Human) Koenigsegg Agera RS (Fastest Street Legal Car) 77.16 m/s d) m/s m/s e) 3 x 108 m/s 73, m/s
5
Problem 1 Batman walks 6 m left and then walks 3 m right in 3s.
Find the distance traveled. Find Batman’s displacement. Calculate Batman’s average speed. Calculate Batman’s average velocity.
6
Problem 2 Hillary Clinton walks 18 m east and then 6 m west in 4s.
Find the distance Hillary traveled. Find Hillary’s displacement. Calculate her average speed. Calculate her average velocity.
7
Problems 3 and 4 3. How far can a cyclist travel in 4s if his average speed is 11.5 m/s? 4. A runner’s initial position is 50.0 m and his final position is 30.5 m. This change in position occurs in 3s. Calculate the average velocity of the runner.
8
Problem 5 A car traveling 90 m/s is 100 m behind a truck traveling at 50 m/s. How long will it take the car to reach the truck?
