1 Thermal Energy and Matter

2 1. Differentiate between heat and temperature
2 GOALS 1. Differentiate between heat and temperature 2. Explain common examples, such as ice in a soda, to show the direction of energy flow.

3 Heat Heat is a form of energy
Total heat in an object = total KE of motion in its atoms. Heat is the transfer of KE from one material to another.

4 Heat Total heat depends on: how fast the molecules are moving and the # of molecules present.

5 Heat All matter has heat energy, even ice!
There can be a lot of heat in a substance even if the temperature is low: Ex. The ocean Heat can flow from one object to another

6 Temperature Temperature is the measurement of the avg. KE of the molecules in a material. Measured in Celsius, Kelvin, or Fahrenheit.

7 Becoming Familiar with Celsius
1. Freezing = ___________ 2. Boiling = ___________ 3. Room temp. = ___________ 4. Body temp. = ___________ 0oC 100oC 25oC 37oC

8 Heat flows from WARMER to COLDER!
