2 A rich and long history Inalco was founded in 1795
Its purpose was to teach a wide range of languages to the French The Inalco remained loyal to its commitment: spread oriental languages knowledge Over the centuries the Inalco has become and institution of unrivalled scope Nowadays it offers one of the richest and most diverse range of language and civilization courses in the world

103 languages and civilization Professionally-focused courses Research-focused courses Divided into 12 areas studies: African, South Asian, South-East Asian, American, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Hebrew, Japanese, Russian, Eurasian, and European studies + 4 Professional oriented curriculum international business, international relations, communication, language teaching and multicultural computing From the undergraduate to the doctorate level 103 languages and civilization taught, divided into professionally focused courses and research-focused courses Professionally-focused courses: which lead to career paths in international business, international relations, communication and intercultural training, language teaching and multilingual computing Research-focused courses: which are centered on a research discipline. The institute also organizes a seminar each year for the research master’s programs, taught by faculty from all disciplines and geographical areas. The doctoral school supervises and facilitates the research of more than 300 PhD students Divided into 12 areas of studies: African, South Asian, South-East Asian, American, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Hebrew, Japanese, Russian, Eurasian, and European studies + international business, international relations, communication, language teaching and multicultural computing From the undergraduate to the doctorate level Bachelor degrees: courses by language and region that can include a professional specialization Master’s degree: regional programs targeting a research discipline or professional direction Doctorate: Phd research at INALCO’s doctorate school

All along those years the INALCO helped to train Academics, Diplomats and Military from more than 50 countries… More than 1/3 of active French Ambassadors and Diplomats Most French Military Attachés ; Many French councilors for Foreign Trade Many famous students were trained at the INALCO: Former minister of Education Edgard FAURE (Russian) Journalist Patrick POIVRE D’ARVOR (Serbian) Jean David LEVITTE (Indonesian-Malay, Chinese) Diplomatic Councilor of former President Nicolas Sarkozy.
