Cultural Critics Cultural Critics are a liability. They cost businesses money and cause problems. “WE are superior; THEY are inferior” One’s own culture is experienced as the only “good” one Other cultures are avoided by psychological and/or physical isolation
18
Cultural Learners Cultural Learners are an asset . They help build companies. One’s own culture is experienced as one of many different cultures. Acceptance of other cultures does not mean agreement Tend to be curious about and respectful towards cultural differences One’s world view is expanded to include other ways of looking at the world.

Cultural Learners are an Asset
Result: high innovation, quick problem solving, information sharing, strong corporate culture, high trust, strong teams Cultural Critics are a Liability Result: damage control & fire fighting, fear and distrust, unstable teams, selective information sharing, weak corporate culture, low trust, high fear, low potential for globalization, low/slow innovation & problem solving 19
