Do anonymous apps make bullying worse?
©VotesForSchools2018 Do anonymous apps make bullying worse? Images: 1- iStock This topic might be difficult to talk about. If you need help, talk to a teacher, or go to slide 29. Anonymous apps are apps where the user’s name is not given or known.

Receiving an anonymous message
©VotesForSchools2018 Receiving an anonymous message Class Activity (4 mins) Without showing anyone, write down a compliment about a classmate. Try to pick someone you don’t often spend time with. Post your comments in a box at the front! Teacher: Read out a couple of the comments. Question How does it feel to receive an anonymous compliment? Johan - He is lots of fun out on the playground. Abeni - She smiles to other children at lunch. Images: 1- 2- Anonymous: Made by someone whose name is not given or known.

Have you ever seen usernames like this online?
©VotesForSchools2018 Receiving an anonymous message However, if you really wanted to find out who wrote them, there would be clues, like handwriting! BumbleBee<3 These comments are anonymous because you don’t know who wrote them. Have you ever seen usernames like this online? HarryP0tter55 Images: 1- 2- 3- 4- 5- This is not the same online. When a comment is sent on a phone, computer or tablet, it is not as easy to tell who wrote it, especially if the app allows users be anonymous.

Receiving an anonymous message
©VotesForSchools2018 Receiving an anonymous message Some people use apps to spread positivity. Konner1 used a secret Instagram account to post kind things about all 637 of his school mates! Other people use apps to say mean things, tease, gang up or leave people out. This is called cyberbullying. Reflect & share (2 mins) How would you feel if you were sent a nasty message and you didn’t know who it was from? Images: 1- 2- 3- 4- iStock References: 1-

users to be anonymous in some way.
©VotesForSchools2018 Why are people worried about these apps? ? Many apps allow their users to be anonymous in some way. Do you know any? Roblox users do not have to give their real name to register, which means you never really know who you are chatting to in games. Images: 1- 2- 3- 4- Fortnite users can speak via a headset anonymously without any record of the conversation. If you are using one of these apps and someone is unkind to you, what might be the problem?

Why are people worried about these apps?
©VotesForSchools2018 Why are people worried about these apps? “You’re so ugly it’s disgusting.” “You’re worth nothing. No one cares about you.” “You’re such a wimp.” a “No one likes you in our class.” “I’m not surprised you don’t have any friends.” b Group task (5 mins) Discuss the consequences someone would face for making a comment like one of the above: Face-to-face at your school. ©VotesForSchools2017 Why are people worried about these apps? Class Activity (6 mins) Turn your class into an agree to disagree line like the one below. Read each statement aloud. Stand on the line to show your views. Explain your reasons to the person standing next to you. People say things online they would never say in real life. People are more likely to bully when they can stay anonymous. People should be allowed to be anonymous online. Bullying online is worse than bullying face to face. “I disagree because…” Images: 1- 2- 3- “I agree because…” Totally Disagree Unsure/in the middle Totally Agree

Do anonymous apps make bullying worse? No
If someone if going to be nasty to someone, I think they will find a way to do it in real life. They don’t need anonymous apps. Anonymous apps like Tootoot can help people reach out and get support when they are being bullied. Only a small amount of people use anonymous apps like Roblox to bully. Most use it sensibly without harming anyone. Image Source 1- Reference ©VotesForSchools2018
27
Do anonymous apps make bullying worse? Yes
Being able to be anonymous means bullies can say what they like and not get caught. It is easier to say something cruel or nasty to someone when you know it’s difficult to find out who said it. Apps should not be anonymous as it is dangerous and people who are bullied on them feel horrible and alone. ©VotesForSchools2018

Need more information or someone to talk to?
Pupils Teachers Remember, you can always talk to a trusted adult, like a teacher or a family member, if you are at all worried about anything. If you need to talk to someone about the concerns you have for a child, call the NSPCC helpline on They are open 24/7. If you need to talk to someone and you’re not sure who to go to, call Childline, a confidential helpline for children, on – they are open 24/7 (all the time!) Internet Matters provides guidance for all age groups about keeping children safe online: Visit The Anti-Bullying Alliance’s pages to find out more about bullying and how to get help: Netaware is a partnership between O2 and the NSPCC that has a brilliant guide on different apps that children use.
