2. Purpose
To abstract forms from life (to breakdown into simplified shapes).
To design unique patterns that are inspired by geometric or organic forms.
To assemble patterns that ranging from light to dark in order to create the illusion of 3D form.
To express a mood with your portrait pose and pattern choice.

3. Directions

4. 1. Have your picture taken, decide if you want to convey a mood with your pose.

5. 2. Create 5 unique patterns that transition from light to dark (see pattern portrait packet).

9. 3. On your 8x10 photograph, outline the general shapes and label 1-5 from lightest to darkest
4. On your 9x 12 paper, trace the photograph in only it’s simplest shapes
5. In pencil LIGHTLY trace in your face with the outlines of the lights and darks as they appear in your picture. Do NOT shade anything in, just LINES!
6. On your photograph label your values from being the lightest & 5 being the darkest. Transfer these numbers to your drawing. 7. Once you have accurately drawn your face & the values , go to the light box & LIGHTLY trace your face on 9x12 paper ***Trace your numbers on your final drawings VERY LIGHTLY!

10. Label each value from 1-5. Do this very lightly, you will be erasing these numbers later! Fill in your corresponding pattern with the number to create value.

12. Criteria for Success The Student Will…
Successfully complete the pattern value scale packet.
Successfully label the lights & darks on their face from 1-5. In a way that clearly shows where the lights & darks should be.
Apply value through pattern in a way that creates the illusion of a 3D form.
Neatly outline each shadow shape with a fine tip sharpie.
Use excellent craftsmanship throughout the entire portrait.
