1 Get Your Students Writing with YouTube
So the title of my talk today is also my objective for the talk: to encourage you to consider some alternative forms of assessment AND to help you believe that you too could if you wanted get your students writing with youtube. full disclosure: I teach online (almost exlcusively) & have for almost a decade. So getting students off their phones is not my main problem as an educator. Getting them to use their phone is! Dr. Steve Gennaro

2 Taken from http://www.jerryking.com/
Cartoonist Jerry King’s comic here is funny but its also a bit true about todays learners: they learn from online tutorials. I mean, Ive learned everything from how to untangle a rubix cube to how to tile my bathroom from youtube. So, while our initial feeling to this may be that – OMG I would definitely not want THAT surgeon! The truth is, that is probably the EXACT surgeon I do want (recognizes a problem the need for help and collaboration, and knows how to and where to see out the solution! Taken from

3 1 2 3 4 5 Ok- so lets take this to the classroom
virtual or traditional. what are the main issues we have right now as teachers with incoming students and writing assignments? Lets play the feud! top 5 answers are on the board.... Exit Game

SH FAMILY FEUD iPhone has melted their brains (57) Writing is a lost art (29) Wikipedia (8) Plagiarism (3) Buy an essay (3) Team A Team B X X X

5 So here is my recommendation for solving those dilemmas
Stop trying to get them to write. Ask yourself? What skills do they need? What is your learning objective? What language do they speak? Dont stop entirely- but maybe slow down the emphasis. I mean part of the issue might just be that we are looking for apples in the pumpkin patch. Yes teach them to write- but maybe change your expectations- this is the push and pull of meeting student expectations and not compromising on academic beliefs. total challenge. Does it work? Yes. Online absolutely But also for in class. Not just online. Does it entirely replace writing No- and it shouldn’t. It should supplement. Is it easy? Yes- all they need is a phone/. TAKE OUT YOUR PHONE lets do it!

6 How to do it: Record it right on your phone/laptop/tablet.
You can alter, edit with imovie or windows movie maker. BUT not necessary. Upload it to YouTube. (or if you record on your phone and have the youtube app its even easier! Post it to moodle or the link

7 3 Suggestions for how to use YouTube
If you teach online: Model it Make it regular Keep it brief If you teach in traditional class room. Introduce it early and without grade Use it as a component not a replacement Keep it brief Also privacy- keep it unlisted, you can do it on your phone
