7.1 Day 1 - Finding Square Roots
Essential Question: How can we find the square roots of a number?
2
Vocabulary Square Root: A number that when multiplied by itself equals the given number. Every positive number has a positive and negative square root! Except Zero only has one square root which is zero. Perfect Square: A number with integers as its square roots. : A radical sign Radicand: The number under the radical sign

Example 2 Find the square root(s) β π Β± π ππ π.ππ βπ ( 20 ) 2
β π Β± π ππ π.ππ βπ ( 20 ) 2 Not a Real # - nothing times itself can be neg

You try: Find the two square roots of the number. 64 144 121
Find the square root(s). Β± ππ β π ππ βππ

Example 3 A square window has an area of 169 ππ π . How wide is the window? Write and solve an equation to find the area of the window. Must write equation 1st!!! A =s2 169=s2 169 = s2 169 = s Add graph to show ordered pairs and not linear 13in = s Use the positive square root; a negative length has no meaning. The window is 13 in wide.
