Sonnet Notes- “if it looks like a square, it’s a sonnet”
Sonnet: Sonnets are poems with 14 lines, usually with 10 syllables in each line, following the traditional English rhythm of unstressed and stressed beats called iambic pentameter. Sonnets are strong examples of poetry with a strict form. The most prominent types of sonnets in English are the Italian or Petrarchan sonnet and the English or Shakespearean sonnet. The Italian (Petrarchan) sonnet consists of one eight-line stanza (an octave) followed by one six-line stanza (a sestet), traditionally with a rhyme scheme such as abbaabba cdecde or ababcdcd cdecde The English (Shakesperean)sonnet consists of three four-line stanzas (quatrains) followed by a single two-line stanza (a couplet), following a rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef gg. The Spenserian sonnet is another prominent type of English sonnet, which has a traditional rhyme scheme of abab bcbc cdcd ee. Traditional sonnets contain strong themes of love but also explore the notion that poems, and art works in general, will outlive their creators.

Sonnet Notes Continued
In the Italian sonnet begins with a strong opening statement of eight lines followed by a resolution to the emotional or intellectual question of the first part of the poem-making the sonnet a self sufficient form, open to shades of mood and a dignified/elevated tone. In England the sonnet shifted away from a slightly more intellectual and argumentative form and added a declamatory couplet. This couplet is the “loudest” and most powerful part of the sonnet.
