Avoiding Plagiarism 1. How does Ambrose avoid plagiarizing Lewis and Clark’s words? Ambrose quotes Lewis and Clark and attributes their words to them by saying things like, “sadly, Clark noted…” 2. Using information from the excerpt, write a sentence about the Lewis and Clark expedition. Do not plagiarize. Example: According to Ambrose, Lewis and Clark saw coyotes before other Americans. 3. Write two sentences of your own about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Include one quotation, and punctuate it correctly. Example: According to Ambrose, Lewis knew about the white pelican, but not because he had seen one with his own eyes. Ambrose writes, “that knowledge came from book learning.”

Summarizing What is the topic? What is the main idea?
B. Read the passage and complete a summary by filling in the blanks. The topic is Annie Peck Smith. The main idea is that she was one of the most extraordinary women in Rhode Island. In an article called “Annie Peck Smith”, the author, Angelika Koller, states the main idea that Annie Peck Smith was an extraordinary woman in Rhode Island. The first reason is her education. The second reason is that she was one of the first female professors in the US. The third reason is that she was an accomplished mountain climber. Of these three reasons, the author argues that her mountain climbing is the most important reason.
