Being Blind John 9: 1-5 John 9:39-41
2
The Light! God gave us life but we don’t understand the meaning and the purpose of life. The closer we get to the light, the better understanding we have of life. David said in Psalm 27:1 “The Lord is my light and my salvation.” It is important for the human race to see the light and comprehend the light
3
What are the things that will hinder us from seeing the light?
There are stages to blindness: - Completely blind: Doesn’t see God in his life Psalm 14:1 “The fool has said in his heart, ‘there is no God’” - Partially blind: They can see God in a wrong way
4
Causes of blindness 1. Wrong parenting Bad environment
Specific people involved in your life Create (or perceive) a wrong image of God in your mind. Ex. Strict, stingy, and a cruel father may not let you view God the same way as you view your father.
5
Causes of blindness 2. God is there just to give him what he needs. If God didn’t give him what he needs, then he will say that God is unfair, cruel, and partial. 3. The blind man only cares about himself and not others.
6
Causes of blindness 4. He has a wrong view (or wrong perception) of others. He takes advantage of people. Envies others Gossip about others Scorn others Utilizes people Causes problems Thinks he is better than other people
7
Causes of blindness 5. The blind man thinks that he is better than others. “The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of that I possess.’” Luke 18: 11-12
8
Causes of blindness 6. The blind man sees himself worthless ( low self esteem), ignorant and has no purpose in life.
9
The blind man doesn’t see himself, or his value in Christ
10
Stages of Blindness Complete blindness: he sees everything dark and black (pessimist). “Whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who don’t believe.” Chorinthians 4:4 “He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.” 1 John 2:9 “Bu he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and doesn’t know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.” 1 John 2:11
11
Stages of Blindness If you have in your life hatred, rejection, and worthlessness, then it will prevent you from seeing Christ. God is the only one who can heal this blind man. “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in he face of Jesus Christ.” 2 Chorinthians 4:6
12
Stages of Blindness 2. The man has blurry vision. Mark 8:24
“He looked up and said, ‘I see men like trees, walking.’” He didn’t taste God or have a connection with him.
13
And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:17
14
Paul on his way to Damascus: “Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.” Acts 9:18
15
Stages of Blindness 3. Nearsightedness
He cares only about his need and opinion. He cares about his problems and not others.
16
Stages of Blindness 4. Farsightedness
“And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but don’t consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to you brother ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” Mathew 7: 3-5 Don’t try to remove the plank from your own eyes because you will take your eye out; but come to Jesus and he will remove it for you.
17
Stages of Blindness 5. Cross-eyed: one eye is on Jesus and one eye is on the world. And Elijah came to all the people, and said, “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people answered him not a word. 1 Kings 18 : 21
18
Stages of Blindness 6. Exophthalmos (Bulge eyes): prideful eyes
Truly God is good to Israel, to such as are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; My steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no pangs in their death, But their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like other men.
19
Stages of Blindness Therefore pride serves as their necklace; Violence covers them like a garment. Their eyes bulge with abundance; They have more than heart could wish. They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression; They speak loftily. They set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue walks through the earth. Psalm 37-1:9
20
Stages of Blindness 7. Healthy eyes but has an infection. “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore you eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness.” Mathew 6:22-23
21
Is their a treatment? The born blind couldn’t see Christ but Christ saw him and he told him to wash his eyes. “And He said to him, ‘Go, wash in the pool od Siloam’ (which is translated, Se). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.” John 9:6-7
22
Is their a treatment? The water symbolizes the Holy Trinity.
“They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns broken cisterns that can hold no water.” Jeremiah 2:13 “That He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word.” Ephesians 5: 26 “On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying ‘If anyone thirsts, let him to me and drink.” John 7:37 “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” Isaiah 55:1
