4 Using a Microscope Learning Activity Open your year 7 textbook to page 16. Collect one of the slides from the front of the class room and attempt to observe it by following the method given in your text book. Health and Safety Be aware, microscope are very heavy and can easily hurt you if they fall of the table. Try to keep your microscope in the middle of your table at all times.

5 Preparing a slide Learning Activity Open your year 7 textbook to page 17. Collect an onion slice from the front of the classroom and follow the “preparing a specimen” method. It’s time to find out what organisms are made of. What can you see? In your notebook, draw a diagram of what you can see under the microscope. The compare work with your partner.

What are organisms made of? Onion cells Cells Cells are very small. They are the basic building blocks of all animals and plants. These photographs show cells seen through a microscope. Cells join together to form tissues and different tissues form together to make your organs. (Heart, lung and kidney) Cheek cells

8 Method Home learning/ Extension activity “A method is a set of scientific instructions which can be followed to perform a particular task.” Produce a method for using a microscope. The method needs to be for the experiment you previously completed and should have all of the different aspects in the success criteria. Success Criteria Clear step by step method is produced. Every step is numbered. Key pieces of equipment are identified in the method. Some aspects or health and safety are included.
