The Gospel in Seven Passages
10
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, Isaiah 61:1-2 When Jesus introduced Himself to the world, this was the passage He read Lu 4:16 And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. 17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written,

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, Isaiah 61:1-2 At the heart of this passage is this idea: the Good News, translated in English GOSPEL Consider how this passage parallels the sermon on the Mount. All Gospel accounts begin with the GOSPEL
12
Gospel: God’s Power to Save
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.“ Romans 1:16-17 The Gospel is God’s power to save. This implies that apart from it there is no power of salvation
13
Gospel: Death, Burial, Resurrection
Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, ……..that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, Corinthians 15:1,3-4 The power of the Gospel to save is established in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus 1Co 15:1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
14
Gospel: The Kingdom of God
Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.“ Mark 1:14-15 When Jesus arose, all authority was given to Him in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18). The Gospel established that authority, which is the kingdom of heaven
15
The Gospel: The Doctrine of Christ
realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, …… and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted Timothy 1:9,11 The Gospel authority is the basis for all doctrine; thus when Jesus arose, He had all authority, and He commanded His disciples to teach all that He had given them
16
The Gospel: Taught By Men
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech…. For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe Corinthians 1:17,21 Per Romans 1 (from faith to faith) Paul declared that the Gospel needed men (either apostles, prophets or teachers) to preach the Good News. Thus Peter states that men were to speak moved by God (2 Peter 1:21). Angels do not bring the Gospel, nor do miracles; Ro 10:14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!"
17
The Gospel: Singular in Presence
But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! Galatians 1:8-9
18
The Gospel: Obeyed by Men
For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? Peter 4:17
