The Options Transition Year TY Leaving Certificate Established LC
Leaving Certificate Applied LCA 2 years Study 7 subjects, academic and practical + LCVP if you qualify Sit Leaving Cert exams coursework and practicals mostly in the final year 2 years Study practical vocational subjects key assignments tasks and exams spread over 2 years. Work experience 1 day per week Interview 1 year programme between JC and LC/LCA Core subjects Subject sampling Projects, teamwork and trips. Work experience 1 day per week Interview

Leaving Certificate Established (traditional)
7 leaving certificate exam subjects Core exam subjects include English, Irish, Maths. 4 additional subjects will be added on. Students are asked to choose 6 subjects in order of preference from the subject choice list. Every effort is made to ensure students get their top 4 preferences. If students choose an LCVP combination of subjects, they will be offered LCVP. This is an additional subject with a strong focus on the world of work and careers. Students can earn extra leaving certificate points with this subject. LCVP involves developing IT skills, work experience and completing a portfolio. 67% of LCVP students last year used points earned in LCVP for CAO choices.

Points to keep in mind making subject choices
A science subject?? Any science medical , or medical related career e.g. nursing 2 science subjects are needed for medicine with exceptionally high leaving cert points Veterinary and some medicine courses require chemistry. A language? Still an entry requirement for many NUI courses e.g. Arts in Maynooth university. UCD/UCC/ NCAD or ART, RCSI. Cadetships in the Defence Forces. A desirable skill for employment Art ? Needed for architecture Higher Level Maths for most engineering courses H4 in Higher Level Irish for primary teaching

A science subject A language Arts/humanities Give yourself time to make a good choice. Subject sample in Transition Year! With subject sampling you will try out Leaving Certificate subjects on offer in our school on a modular basis. Remember TY is about trying out new things and challenging yourself. You are expected to participate fully in all subject sample classes. They are not optional.

Leaving Certificate Applied LCA
A practical Leaving Certificate programme. Prepares students for the world of work and lifelong learning. Building confidence and skills through active and practical work. Work experience 1 day per week – real life learning. Less emphasis on final exams as exams and assessments are spread out across the two years. Students work towards getting credits in key assignments and tasks. LCA is awarded as a Pass, Merit or Distinction just like college/training courses.

Why choose LCA? IF you want to stay in school and get a Leaving Certificate. IF you get better results from learning by doing over learning from a book studying and tests. IF you prefer to earn your Leaving Certificate as you go along. IF you want to get work experience at school that could lead to a career choice.

What’s important about choosing LCA?
An interview Good attendance – 90 % to earn the credits. Remember LCA uses continuous assessment. You must be in and doing the work to get the credit. Just like real life !! Good participation and teamwork. Know that we expect the very best from you like any other programme!!

Transition Year - TY At present 30,000 young people do transition year in approximately 560 schools. Why? A year to mature personally – having opportunities to develop communication skills, self-confidence and a sense of real responsibility. A year to mature in your learning – to become a self-directed learner. This is a major key skill for success in the Leaving Certificate. Many students credit their Leaving Certificate success and good career choices to the Transition Year Experience. A year to mature in relation to the world of work and careers. Social Maturity – by developing greater people skills and awareness of the world outside school. Ability to make more informed choices about Senior Options.

What’s important to know about TY
Core subjects – English, Irish, Maths, Science, PE. Subject sampling – Trying out Leaving Certificate subjects to help you discover your talents and make better choices. TY specific - Programmes, Projects, Trips etc More focus on projects and practical tasks than in 5th year. An application and interview. A great opportunity to add to your CV. We expect the best from you! Excellent participation and team work expected. The TY year is a good as you make it !!! Cost €300.

What's next? Students and parents/guardians should take some time to consider the best subject and programme choices. Students should reflect on their Careers Interest Inventories and advice from the Guidance department. For more information on specific subjects and programmes including LCVP subject combinations please refer to the Senior Options Subject Choice Booklet. All students are asked to make subject choices for the Leaving Certificate. Please fill out the subject choice form and return it to the School Secretary. If you wish to apply for the LCA or TY programmes please take an application form, fill this out and return it along with your subject choice forms to the School Secretary. Places on the LCA and TY programmes are limited. Applicants will be interviewed. All forms and applications must be given the School Secretary by Monday 11th March by 2pm.
