5 Let’s Discuss… Look back at your bellringer.
What do you think is the central idea of “Can Animals Think?” Look at your handout from class yesterday. What do you think was Eugene Linden’s BEST support for his central idea? What do you think was Linden’s WORST support for his central idea? What questions do you still have about this text?

6 How can we use this text to write an essay?
As we have been discussing, we are preparing for a RESEARCH project. That means that we cannot write what we already know BEFORE researching. Rather, we must write about what we learn AFTER researching our topic—animal intelligence.

7 What does that look like in an actual essay?
Let’s look at a claim that might be a topic sentence for a body paragraph. Research indicates that animals exhibit intelligence when using communication. What evidence from the text would be support this claim? QUOTE: “Washoe eventually learned more than 130 words from the language of the deaf called American Sign Language.” PARAPHRASE: Additionally, when Washoe saw a swan, something she had never learned a specific sign for, she made the signs for “water” and “bird” indicating that she had not just memorized the signs but actually understood their meaning and could apply them independently.

8 Let’s put that all together…
Research indicates that animals exhibit intelligence when using communication. Linden states, “Washoe eventually learned more than 130 words from the language of the deaf called American Sign Language.” Additionally, when Washoe saw a swan, something she had never learned a specific sign for, she made the signs for “water” and “bird” indicating that she had not just memorized the signs but actually understood their meaning and could apply them independently. Turn & Talk: WHAT IS A THESIS STATEMENT THAT THIS PARAGRAPH WOULD SUPPORT? WHAT IS THIS PARAGRAPH MISSING? A CLARIFYING STATEMENT!

9 WRITE-PAIR-SHARE Research indicates that animals exhibit intelligence when using communication. Linden states, “Washoe eventually learned more than 130 words from the language of the deaf called American Sign Language.” Additionally, when Washoe saw a swan, something she had never learned a specific sign for, she made the signs for “water” and “”bird” indicating that she had not just memorized the signs but actually understood their meaning and could apply them independently. Take THREE MINUTES to write a CLARIFYING STATEMENT for the paragraph above that connects it to the following thesis statement: Research indicates that animals do, in fact, exhibit behaviors indicative of intelligence rather than mere instinct.

10 Final Product (Body Paragraph)
Research indicates that animals exhibit intelligence when using communication. Linden states, “Washoe eventually learned more than 130 words from the language of the deaf called American Sign Language.” Additionally, when Washoe saw a swan, something she had never learned a specific sign for, she made the signs for “water” and “bird” indicating that she had not just memorized the signs but actually understood their meaning and could apply them independently. This evidence indicates that animals can exhibit intelligence beyond mere instinct. CRITICAL THINKING: If this were an actual essay, what problem would your teacher have with this paragraph (think about how to avoid plagiarism).
