A Strategy for Inclusive Accessibility Testing for Novices and Experts
Accessing Higher Ground, 2018 NOTE TO SALES TEAM: Modify this initial slide to include your contact info and avatar. Larry L. Lewis, Jr. Director of Channel Sales and Strategic Partnerships
2
Objectives Define manual accessibility testing and its importance within an accessibility effort Identify challenges that manual testers face Establish a consistent method of reporting, sharing, and tracking website deficiencies Offer three visual strategies for testing audio content spoken by a screenreader
3
Who are we? TPG is an accessibility firm that provides guidance to organizations across sectors to ensure that their content conforms with digital accessibility guidelines Owned by a parent company that manufactures assistive technology tools utilized by persons who have limited to no vision Leverages partnership with other 3rd-party experts to provide comprehensive service delivery to its customers.
4
Why manual testing? Provides usability feedback unavailable through automated scanning of code Validates keyboard/gesture usage and interaction when assistive technology is enabled Provides springboard for early adoption of accessibility best practices into a development effort Offers prospective for developers of digital content and their disabled audience
5
Assistive technology testing for sighted testers
Screenreaders are rich in features for end users––many of which are not useful for sighted testers Steep learning curve for operating and configuring Many keyboard shortcuts and gestures Manually file bugs with only voice output Takes time to get consistent, reliable results Difficult to multi-task with speech
6
What is JAWS Inspect? Vastly simplifies accessibility and JAWS compatibility testing Removes the distraction of speech or the complex feature set of the end-user product Uses transcripts of JAWS output to quickly diagnose issues and share them easily across quality control and compliance systems
7
Benefits Simplifies screenreader use for testers
Text transcript of JAWS output for use in bug tracking and compliance programs Real-time identification of issues Rapid rollout with limited training required Demonstrates impact of accessibility on users
8
Launching JAWS Inspect

16
Focus on the Element Speech output
Extra information supplied by JAWS to the user in bold, italic format Screenshot Code Navigate the DOM tree and find the same information for parent elements

ARIA Live Rapidly test your ARIA Live regions without using a screen reader Helpful for testing error messaging in forms that use ARIA Live Capture JAWS output in real-time
18
New feature – Say All Report
Provides a linear view of JAWS speech, reflecting the content order on the page Compare the JAWS output to the source to spot differences or elements that are not spoken
