1 EUROPEAN UNION EUROPEAN SOCIAL FUND OPERATIONAL PROGRAMME SCIENCE AND EDUCATION FOR SMART GROW Green Technologies Innovative Materials Research network GreTInMat Four-day working meeting Starosel, Bulgaria, June 18 – 21, 2018 The section “The chemical technology of textile and leather” is part of the Department of Fundamentals of Chemical Technology at University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, Sofia, Bulgaria. This is the only centre in Bulgaria where training in this field can be carried out. The members of the group, which are carrying research in the textile, consist: Dr. Desislava Staneva Grabcheva – Assoc. Professor Dipl.-Ing. Daniela Atanasova, MSc – PhD student Dipl.-Ing. Miglena Irikova, MSc – PhD student Research at the Group is focussed on: smart textile with optical sensor properties, for medical application (antimicrobial materials, wound dressing) and environmental protection (adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of the pollutants, UV-absorbers); modification of textile with stimuli responsive polymers (dendrimers, hydrogel, polymer brushes)] with embedded metal ions and inorganic nanoparticles; self-cleaning, self-healing textile materials

EUROPEAN UNION EUROPEAN SOCIAL FUND OPERATIONAL PROGRAMME SCIENCE AND EDUCATION FOR SMART GROW Preparation, characterization, and antibacterial activity of composite material: Cotton fabric-hydrogel-nanoparticles  Desislava Staneva, Daniela Atanasova, Miglena Irikova University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, Department of Fundamentals of Chemical Technology Abstract: Different methods were used to obtain new composite materials based on cotton fabric–hydrogel–nanoparticles (silver, ZnO, barium hexaferrite). The hydrogels, synthesized by photopolymerization, were utilized to provide uniform distribution and binding of the nanoparticles to the fiber surface and to prevent their agglomeration. The modification of the cotton fabric were analyzed by a transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), fluorescence and colourimetric analyses. The antibacterial activities of the composite materials have been investigated in agar medium and meat-peptone broth. Significantly high antibacterial effect on the bacteria tested was achieved. This suggests potential application of the new formulations as effective wound dressings to control the spread of infections. Acknowledgment: „The research networkhas been financially supported by the Operational Programme "Science and education for smart growth" of the European Union cofounded by the European Social Fund through the project BG05M2ОP “Support for the development of capacity of doctoral students and young researchers in the field of engineering, natural and mathematical sciences”
